CX Service In Y Class JFK-DPS Via YVR/HKG

Sat Aug 21, 2004 6:06 am

Hey there,
This October I will be traveling from JFK to DPS on CX (in the back unfortunately but the fare was great at $600 R/T) Can anyone fill me in on what to expect in terms of comfort/service and entertainment as this will be my first time on CX. Ill be on a A340-300 from JFK-HKG via YVR and a A330 from HKG-DPS.
Thanks a lot  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I thought NYC - HKG was nonstop? Anyway, I used to work for them, and I flew them as well, but only on the 744 ( But not in the back.. sorry  Laugh out loud). I'm sure you'll have a long, but nice flight! Enjoy it! ( And tell us all about it..)

CX has non-stop service on the 346, as well as connecting service through YVR on the 343.

Back to the original topic, there have been quite a few CX JFK-HKG trip reports that cover the questions.

CX flies double daily to JFK, one is a direct 16hrs+ service (CX830/1) (as KI911 has been thinking), while the other one involves a stop at YVR (CX888/889).

In most circumstances, CX services work pretty well, but with the exception of some new F/A recruits, who are in my opinion, slightly less experienced and hospitable in dealing with passengers..

Anyway enjoy your flight!!  Smile

Ia Orana All !

I will also be flying CX to DPS but from LAX and also found excellent fares, couldn't get the 600 USD one because I am not a US resident but still got a great deal 886 USD including taxes.
I am looking forward to try CX for the first time too. I will be flying out of LAX on the 5th at 0155, stay 3 days in HKG than fly to DPS on the 9th and then back to HKG and LAX on the 15th.
Will tell you more after the trip !

Happy Flying,

CX Y service is pretty decent... seats are not that comfortable with about 32" of legroom, but is about the norm these days. There are PTVs on all your flights and there will be an amenity kit (very basic) given out on the YVR-HKG flight, and menu cards will be available.

About meals, you will get a dinner on JFK to YVR, and then a supper, noodle snacks, and breakfast on the YVR to HKG, and then a hot meal from HKG to Denpasar. On return, you will get a hot meal on the first leg to HKG, and then a dinner/noodle/brunch on HKG to YVR, and then a lunch on YVR to JFK.

Just a word about your transit at YVR... on your way to HKG, you are not allowed to deplane and have to stay on board during the one hour layover. On your return flight, you will have to deplane on YVR and stay in a sterile gate area... but CX has some hot drinks and juice boxes and muffins set up in this sterile area.

Enjoy your CX flight!

While you're at it.. the fare does not allow you to earn AAdvantage miles but it DOES however allow you to earn ASIAMILES. You may join at www.asiamiles.com

No guarantee, but if you pay $50, and join the Marco Polo Club, even at GREEN level, you could improve your chances of an upgrade should coach be oversold. Cathay will upgrade their top tier members first, followed by other oneWorld elite members. They'll then scan the reservation lists for people who are members of the Marco Polo Club Silver and possibly Green levels over people who have no status.

The Marco Polo Club is the same as ASIAMILES but you will earn towards tier points to elite levels. You need at least 30K miles total in a year to get SILVER. You'll be allowed lounge access when flying on CX flights.

The rules do not state anything about not earning AA miles, and AA says that all CX flights can earn mileage.

Do you have other information?

B777fa, sorry, but it is highly unlikely that you will be upgraded.

Thank you everyone for your responses.I will post my experience once I get back from the holiday mid October.
Another question...Whilst myself and my partner have opted to buy tickets to Bali from JFK, my neighbours have opted to Non-rev. Is DPS very difficult to non rev (in and out of) during the beginning of October? Seems like all the flights from SIN/BKK/HKG/TPE are all full. My neighbour seems to think that he will be best going from SEA-DPS VIA TPE on BR (beginning of Oct) using a ZED fare.

thanks  Smile/happy/getting dizzy Jeff

SafetyDude, why on earth are you posting a link from CX's webpage in HK when B777fa is originating from USA? Sure AA says that all CX flights will earn miles... but did they tell you that it's only for fares booked in Y, B or H class?

The fare that B777fa got is in L class and he can only earn miles in Asiamiles, Swiss' TravelClub or Alaska Airlines MVP. He will NOT earn any miles on AAdvantage.

B777fa, it seems that you're a FA, if I'm not mistaken? Trick in getting possible op-ups.... when asked to show ID, flash your crew ID along with your passport.

Going on stand-by with CX is a very nerve wrecking affair. One gets to hang around the check-in area at closing time and then one gets to wait alongside other CX staff members travelling. Then names are called. Some do get on, some do not. It's good when one travels alone, but not when travelling with someone else. Flights to DPS vary. It's not really school holidays or peak travel season, otherwise, CX won't be offering special deals.

But trust me, if you want to increase your chances of an op-up, join the Marco Polo Club.

Thanks Guybetsy1 for the info. Yes Im a F/A for American, I purchased the offer on the web a couple of months ago and picked our seats also online. Has the flashing the ID badge worked for you in the past with CX? I get a lot of negative responses from my fellow crewmembers about CX upgrading, but Im just happy not to travel standby !!!!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy.....thanks again

cx's Y class service, although is not one of the best in the world, CX has one of the better service on the air.. i have never flown on JFK-YVR-HKG before, but for LAX-HKG... you will receive two meals, in addition to the midnight snacks upon your request... CX's also has a wonderful IFE that works well... seat pitch, although might be quite restricted, i do find it acceptable for long haul flight...

if you really want to have an op-up.. Marco Polo is defintely your choice.. i flown HKG-SUB (half an hour from DPS) for four times this year, 3 of them were upgraded to J due to the overbooking in Y... they will always upgrade their Marco Polo members first..

by the way... i am wondering where did u get your fares?? that is very cheap!!

anyway.. hope you will have a wonderful experience with CX..

SafetyDude, why on earth are you posting a link from CX's webpage in HK when B777fa is originating from USA?
Well, first of all, B777fa is flying on CX, second, the link that I posted was the US site (here is the Hong Kong site: http://www.cathaypacific.com/hk), and third, that link was for the fare rules that he said he booked (fare rules usually include FFP mileage accrual).

Sure AA says that all CX flights will earn miles... but did they tell you that it's only for fares booked in Y, B or H class?
They also mention First and Business fares.  Big grin

The fare that B777fa got is in L class
Take a look at my reply, reply #7: "Do you have other information?"

Your little rant falls under my request of "other information". All that you had to do was say that the fare was booked in L.

Calvin99,
The deal was on Cathey's US website under "Deal of the month" two months ago.It was funny because my neighbours and I decided on Bali as our vacation spot this year and low and behold when I pulled up CX website the deal was posted. My neighbours though didn't book the deal and now are having a hard time trying to find a way to Non-rev there!

In two weeks I will be flying YVR - JFK on CX. I have joined the AA Advantage Program. I believe I am booked in "M" class. Will I be able to earn AA miles? Will I be able to earn Asia Miles? I do prefer the AA Program since I can earn points at some restaurants in New York (one of which I'm planning to go to).

How is the service on the YVR - JFK flight? Does someone know what the entertainment and the food is like?

M-class bookings on CX do not earn AA miles: http://www.aa.com/apps/AAdvantage/ViewMileageProgramsPartnerDetail.jhtml?fileName=cathayPacific.xml&repositoryName=AAdvantagePartnersContentRepository&repositoryId=11300154&itemDescriptor=AAdvantagePartnersContent.

These are CX's partners: http://www.cathaypacific.com/intl/ff/partner/0,,,00.html. Do not that you should check with the airline (via e-mail or phone) if your particular booking class will earn miles.

If you can earn miles on Alaska Airlines (a CX partner), I would highly suggest joining the Alaska FFP, as miles never expire and Alaska is partnered with all of the OneWorld members (you can earn AS miles on AA flights).

I would check out the trip reports.

Ia Orana All !

Thanks for all the info on CX, they'll be very useful to me too. FOr yself, I am also a Flight attendant but for Air France based in Tahiti.
I went to DPS last june and flew nonrev from Tahiti to NRT than flew to SIN on JAL and then SQ between SIN to DPS. On the way back I did DPS-BKK on TG and then BKK-NRT-LAX on ANA. every single flight was empty ! I had no trouble getting on each time and had a full row each time. Yet the flights between TPE and DPS on both BR and CI were FULL ! It was my primary choice to go via TPE but couldn't get a seat as all flights were full !
Anyway, B777fa, have a great trip and we should try to post a trip report about our respective CX trips !

Happy FLying,

AF Cabin Crew.
