CO Returning To HOU

Sat Aug 21, 2004 2:13 pm

According to a local radio ad (heard by an IAH Spotters Club member), CO is returning to HOU with flights to EWR (735s) and CLE (ERJ145s). Indeed checking http://www.continental.com , these flights are listed in the skeds. I am just not certain of the start up date as there is no special notification of the upcoming HOU service mentioned on their web site.

***BTW, if this has been covered before, please ignore. However I could not locate a similar thread.

The service to both EWR and CLE begin on September 8th. EWR gets one 735 and CLE get 2 ERJ's.
CO's website has it misprinted. They reversed the two to show EWR as one RJ and CLE two 735's.

I am glad to see another airline return to HOU. It seems that the traffic at HOU has died down some since the late 90's. There is plenty of unused ticket counter space there, plus they have that nice new addition. I had lunch there last week and I thought the place looked terrific.

Nice to see CO do these flights even though aircraft maintance have been taken place in HOU since the TI take over.

There a lot of unused Gates on Concourse A too.

Ticket counter space is an issue because of the belt config.

Thomas,

I think we decided it was on 95.7 FM, not 740 AM. Someone else heard it, too.

Now HOU traffic will be WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, CO, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, CO, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN, WN...... Outstanding!

I wish Contiental would add more cities, rather than just add service to other hubs. But oh well, any addition to HOU is better than none.

It would be nice if Continental snuck in a 757 to HOU every now and then.  Smile That would turn some heads.

Well CO tried service to a number of cities from HOU in the late 80s but it just did not oan out.

I remember in the early 90's, CO and UA had nonstop service from DEN to HOU to complement service to IAH. Both eventually dropped it. I think CO did first, then UA did later.

Speaking of my last post, I would like to see CO go from HOU to DEN again! There is no competition on the route, and IAH to DEN is one of CO's key markets, even long after CO's dismantling of the DEN hub.

If the EWR runs prove successful--Continental has a long way to go before working up to 757s--they are starting at the bottom of their airliner ranks with a 737-500. I'd see them add more flights or cylce it through 733, 73G, 738, 739 before anything else.

I understood that the HOU service was an attempt to make up for the discontinuation of the Ellington Field service, which will be discontinued at the time HOU starts up.

Correct... not that it will completely make up for the loss of EFD-IAH service. Passengers who used to fly routes like EFD-IAH-LAX or EFD-IAH-PHX aren't going to be helped by the new routes out of Hobby... they'll just be stuck with the drive again.

EWR-HOU, at the most, would go to a 73G, as far as I can see. Anything larger is used for high-density routes, and CO isn't going to take it's limited fleet to undermine the hub in IAH to run a 738 or larger EWR-HOU.

AA already operates nonstops to NYC, I believe it's two flights a day on the Super 80. It would be great for CO to finally join, considering they have a big hub in NJ.

I remember when UA used to fly into HOU. They used to bring in the 732s, and 733s, maybe the 735s too. This was mainly before the gray scheme was implemented. They left HOU around 92 or 94. I think the only way we'd see a CO 752 at HOU is as an equipment substitution, or a flight low on fuel, needing to land because of t-storms at IAH. It would be nice to see though.

An HOU-related question...

Is Southwest using all the gates on the new Central Concourse now? I know they had opened five or six of them last year for flights to Dallas, Corpus Christi, Harlingen, etc., but that many flights were still on Concourse A. Have they moved everything over now?

Are Concourses B and C still standing or were they demolished? What is the timeframe for rebuilding Concourse A?

I was out at HOU yesterday, and noticed that Concourse A is still standing, with several gates being used by WN. Concourse C is still standing, and is still being used by AA, DL, and others. I have not been in the new concourse in a while, so I don't know if WN is using all the gates there or not.

As far as additional service at HOU is concerned, I am all for it as I live in Sugar Land and find Hobby to be more convenient than IAH.

I know that the construction at HOU was behind schedule but last time I was there a couple of months ago, they were still standing. As far as a 757 low on fuel--you'd probably see them land at EFD before Hobby due to the empty space and longer runways (even though 75s can land at HOU). I was on a 753 from MSY that almost diverted to EFD for fuel due to weather that had shut down IAH, however while were on approach they opened IAH up and we were the 1st airliner to land back at IAH.

United also ran 727-200s into HOU in the early 90s, I also remember seeing Pan Am 727-200s and 737-200s at Hobby during the same timeframe. Sidenote--I wish Transtar was still around, they had excellent service on their MD80s.
