Would You Book A Flight On US And UA For December?

Mon Aug 23, 2004 3:10 am

I found a very cheap fare that has flights on UA and US this december but i am hesitant to book as I do not know what the future has in store for these two carriers. Would you book it? If i do book it and one of the airlines does go under what will happen with my ticket? Also, is there channel 9 on ted?

Be sure to pay with it using a credit card. If one of the carriers goes under, you can get a full refund from your credit card company.

Yes..I would make a reservation with them for travel in December, whether with credit card or cash, the airline must provide transportation for you and fufil the "contract"
or provide you a refund...otherwise the kitty litter can hit the fan in the airlines favor...legal trouble city!

JMH - while you are correct, why would you chance it with cash?? When you pay by check or cash, you must file a claim with the airline - making yourself a creditor of the airline and dealing with undue hassle. By using a credit card, you just file a claim with your credit card company. Typically they will credit your account right away - so you wouldn't have to wait for an airline to cough up a check.

Yes, I would definitely do it. In fact, I am currently researching fares for travel for Dec-Jan05. This type of scare has happened before when UA filed for bancruptcy. I don't see any reason to be hesitant.

If you pay by credit card and it's a domestic flight, the financial risk is fairly small. However, if your ticketing airline goes belly up, there is the risk of all the seats being taken on competing airlines if you're flying during a popular holiday period or on a route with limited competition.

So if you MUST get someplace at a specific time, why take the chance on US or UA?

If time isn't important, then book on US or UA and maybe you'll get to spend a night in some exciting hub airport in the middle of winter.  Smile

Seriously, now ... US is a bigger risk.

I wouldn't worry about flying UA in December. As a matter of fact, I have already booked my yearly KOA-LAS trip at the end of December. If they go out before then, I'll buy your ticket back!  Smile

Me and my gf bought our tickets back in March for our 2004 Christmas on UA/Ted (PHX-SFO-SEA-SFO-PHX) and it cost us $130 for me, and $160 for her (we booked our rez separately). We are excited to go and we are not worried about UA, we know UA will be fine in December no doubt!

US will be here in December too, dont worry. THe loads on all the caribbean flights are already heavy for this winter season, (I work in GND so i monitor this) so obviously a lot of people have no fear either.

As much as people give definite dates of US demise, I will tell you confidently that US will still be here in December, and I am will to put my head on a block for that.

Mark my words.. this is captaink speaking...  Smile

I wouldn't fly either of them, according to the rocket men of this forum both carriers should be gone by Christmas. Insane

US I wouldn't. UA should be ok. I am flying UA September 7th. I think they can survive, US is in trouble.

I would confidently continue to give my business to the airline of my choice, even if it is US or UA.

Without their loyal customers, there's no chance of making it through.

If you use Cash, and US would go out of business, they won't supply you with anything-you're on your own, basically. Use a credit card.

And I would book UA. I would not, with all respect to our USAir colleagues, book US, since I don't think they'll be around.

UA will be around in December.

US is highly questionable.

Just because you are loyal to an airline doesn't mean it won't go belly-up.

Frankly, any airline that publicly claims it may go out of business in the next few months, as US has if certain conditions aren't met, should expect see passengers depart in droves. Why be loyal to a company that can't put together an effective business plan?

Steer clear of US!
