YX Before Sept. 11th

Mon Aug 23, 2004 10:54 am

I have found a route map of Midwest and it is from the year 2000 I believe. While looking at it I noticed they operated alot more routes then, especially out of MCI. How many flights were flown out of MCI on midwest to these cities- MSY,ATL,BOS. Also how many YX flights were flown on these routes out of OMA-LAX,MCO,EWR. How was YX doing before sept. 11th financially? Could any of these routes make a come back eventually? Thanks for any info.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

YX entered the MSY market not long after Vanguard started MCI-MSY service. The YX service was initially twice daily with the DC9-10, and eventually became a once-daily DC9-30 service for the last six or so months of its existence. While Vanguard usually enjoyed heavy loads in the market (as they were targeting the leisure traveller), the YX flights were going out usually half-full on weekdays, mostly with business flyers. Unfortunately, MSY-MCI is not exactly a huge business market. YX never really marketed itself here, and I dare say most people in the area never even knew they flew here.
If they came back with MD-80 Saver Service to MCI they could probably do pretty well, as there is no longer any MSY-MCI nonstop service, but I doubt they will. That being said, they still have their ticket counter sign hanging up over their old check-in positions.

MSYTristar,

Thanks, thats exactly the info I was looking for! Out of all the cities in the US I would want YX to bring MSY service back(or SAN). Even though it will probably never happen lets just keep hoping.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Speaking of YX, I sure do miss their employees here. Great group of people. They gave me a free in-flight meal, cookies, and a bottle of Midwest Express Chardonnay for my birthday in 2001.

flying phx-msy two years ago, i purposefully chose to fly hp phx-mci so i could connect with yx from mci-msy to get to try them out. it was a saturday flight, late afternoon from mci-msy, dc-9-10, only about 20 people on it, because agents said most had gone out on the earlier morning flight. full meal service, traditional old yx style, with wine/champagne service, and then the cookies before landing. return was monday morning, was suppose to be a dc-9-10, but one of the sunday late flights canceled, so on monday they brought in a dc-9-30 to carry the extra passengers. again, full meal and same service, great flights, glad i went out of my way to get to try them out

I was hoping to fly on the 717 from MSY-MCI, but then they told me that Midwest was cancelling service to MSY. I was disappointed.

Back in 95 i flew MKE-LAX with a stop in OMA. I think this was on a DC9-32 but i was only 9 so i don't know for sure. Both flights were certainly very good though, and i remember them vividly. On MKE-OMA we got a pizza pocket snack, and on OMA-LAX it was a cold lunch but very good with chicken and beef cold cuts with potato salad.

I sure do miss the days of the great food selections, but i know they gotta do what they gotta do to stay alive.

These were some of my favorite signature YX meals...
- Filets to LAS
- Door County Cherry pancakes to SFO
- Filets and Lobster to LGA

Truly a great and special airline!
