AA 767-300 IFE/PTV?

Mon Aug 23, 2004 11:13 am

Questions regarding American Airlines IFE plans for coach passengers. I recently flew AA to and from Europe on the newer 763s that AA has purchased. Now, there are no PTVs for coach, yet under the seats there were those pesky IFE boxes that limit your space under the seat in front of you. Also, in the armrest were controllers (presumably for playing games and controlling the PTV). But, there are no PTVs, just the LCDs scattered every few rows above the aisles. So, why have the boxes under each seat and spend all that money? Are they planning to add PTVs for coach? Personally they should since they use the 763 on their longest european route (to FCO) and there are no PTVs yet they have them on their shortest european route (777s into LHR). Sorry if this has been discussed before but I did search and found nothing.

This is a total complete 100% GUESS. But, it could be because they are installing the same seats on the 767 that they are installing on the 777, so to save money, they could be ultimately going for just one seat design.

Just a guess

Actually, if I remember correctly, AA had plans to introduce PTVs on the newer B767-300ERs that they received from Boeing. After 9/11, everything went downhill, as we all know. So, in an event to slash costs, AA dumped the idea of slapping the PTVs on the 763s, but still installed the seats, and I believe all of the wiring, so that when finances permit, they can put them in with ease.
But don't quote me on that  Big grin.

Now, I'm none one of these teenyboppers that simply refuses to fly an airline without PTVs, but if that damn box is under the seat in front of me, I better have a TV to watch!

Hey guys

Just an update from a friend "in the know", the boxes are there to provide laptop power to the seat occupant as well.

Delta did the same thing with the 767-400, I believe.

I flew SFO-ORD and didn't have this box in my seat and it was a 763. Now when I was flying SJU-LAX it too was a 763 and I saw this. The TV's were flat panel and even in the sun you could see the TV GREAT! The box was a pain and you got this remote control that came out that really sucked b/c u couldn't do anything with it. So I think they were but due to funds didn't. Now with actual a/c on hold still (a few 777's if I recall correctly) I don't think we will be seeing the 767's with ptv's for a while. Now that fleet is rather young so it could still be on the list somewhere down the road.

Thanks again

Hey guys... PanAm330 got it right. PTVs were to be installed on all 763s, and since the eight new 763s were ordered with PTVs, they couldn't scrap the idea all together on the new birds. Instead of having just eight 763s with PTVs, AA decided to keep the fleet as similar as possible knowing they wouldn't be able to go ahead with their plans for PTVs in all 763s for quite some time. The boxes do help provide power for laptops and other PEDs, they are as big as they are because they were to power the PTVs.

Had American had their way, they wouldn't have even taken delivery of those news birds, but could not defer them.

On a side note, a pilot was telling me today AA is about to or already has struck a deal to buy five UA 777s. I have no idea where he got this information, but it came about in a conversation we were having about planes joining the fleet. The other rumor is AA leased back three ex-TWA 757s. We had a fleet of about 32, and back in November, 16 of them went back to the lessors, and AA kept the other 16... at least until next year. We may have gotten three of them back.

As far as the 777s go, I wonder how this will work out with the deferred 777 and 738 orders still on Boeing's books. I beileve AA is to start taking deilvery of those again in 2006. I haven't heard anything about those deferments lately.
