China Southern To Join SkyTeam

Mon Aug 23, 2004 9:56 pm

"China Southern Airlines Ltd (HKSE:1055), the country's largest carrier, is expecting to become the first Chinese airline to join a global alliance, beating domestic rivals to the punch in expanding its worldwide network.

China Southern (SS:600029) (NYSE:ZNH) will sign a memorandum of understanding on Saturday to enter SkyTeam, an alliance whose members include Air France (SBF:AIRF), Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL) and Korean Air <003490.KS>, an airline spokesman said on Monday."

China Southern is the PRC's largest carrier, and its focus is primarily domestic.... that's what SkyTeam is after.

Amazing how CZ continues to pioneer so many achievements (in terms of PRC carriers) despite not being the government's priority focus!  Big thumbs up

They have their largest hub at Guangzhou (CAN) with is at the southern tip of mainland China. With that said, it does not make sense for their international partners (AF, KL and KE) to go to CAN first and connect there. On the other hand they are going to have an entire terminal (remodelled T1) at PEK all to itself so I'm assuming they are aggressively building a hub at PEK. I think CZ is positioning itself in the right direction and taking a foothold at PEK, which is more of CA's turf.

B2443,
you analysis model works fine.... assuming the PRC was a free-access market, even to its own carriers.

It isn't.

It's liberalising, sure... but not to the point where CZ could agressively expand its PEK operations at the potential expense of CA. Hence among the many reasons why CZ does indeed plan to fortify its CAN ops, as well as its current/future partners strengthing their position there as well.

This is not unexpected,CZ have had a codeshare with DL on their US-China flights,it was just a matter of time before they joined the Skyteam alliance.

For future alliances,I expect Air China to join Star and China Eastern to join Oneworld.

Also appears that Shanghai Airlines will go the way of Star.

suprise suprise, didn't expect CZ to join first. i thought CA or MU would have a go before CZ. for CZ, based at CAN, a not so good location in skyteam as there is no feed traffic from the partners from the south, apart from the very poor frequencies of services to SYD and MEL from CZ itself. PEK wouldn't be any better than ICN for international connections and KE do have a reasonable network in mainland. in terms of purely domestic network, CZ certainly will help to build skyteam's network. it's good to see CZ there but not as a good news as if MH would join.

for the other 2 alliances
star is doing quite well without a mainland carrier as SQ,NH and OZ all have reasonable networks in mainland and both PEK and PVG receive services from 9 different star carriers. CA might join latter on but not so crucial as KA+FM could also cover reasonably well if CA decides no.

oneworld seems really lack traffic in china. the destinations served are PEK with AY, BA and CX ,and PVG with AY and QF(not yet). MU would do a lot to onewould along with JL if they join.By the way, the relationship btw MU and CX is really confusing.
