Air Tran's Wrecked 737-200 Moved Today In ATL?

Tue Aug 24, 2004 1:28 pm

It looked like Air Tran's old crashed (now painted white) 737 that has been setting by the old NW hanger moved today. It looked like the ATL fire department was maybe using it for fire drills or something. Can anybody confirm this, and if so does the AFD do this often? I have been stationed in ATL for almost 2 years and can not recall the 737-200 ever moving.

I think it's "wrecked"  Big grin

Interesting news though..I always see that thing sitting there, hasn't moved an inch as far as I could tell. Will look next week when I fly back up there.

I wonder how movable it actually is, considering it's been sitting in GRASS in Atlanta, where the weather isn't exactly favorable to airplane type materials on an abandoned, uncared-for airframe ...

There has to be huge amounts of rust and corrosion on that thing - how would that affect something as simple as its ability to roll on tires, assuming the tires are even intact enough to roll?

Or do you just tug on it 'til it moves anyway?

The airport has used the a/c (which was w/o'd by the leasing company) as part of the airport's annual disaster drill. I saw them move it onto one of the taxiways last Summer around this time for the drill. They also have some small commuter-sized a/c hulk they use as well.

It happened Nov 1, 1998. The aircraft went off the runway after making an emergency landing. No fatalities. Full story here:
