Southwest And JetBlue On Expedia

Thu Aug 26, 2004 9:20 am

What are the possibilities that JetBlue and/or Southwest will sell their tickets on places like Expedia or Orbitz?

About as much of a chance of them doing that as one of us winning the lottery. By participating on one of these travel websites, the airlines have to give a commission to the site (much like how a travel agency used to), and even if it's a few dollars per reservation, that adds up over time to money that the airline could have saved by not participating. Some smaller airlines do participate so to give greater exposure to their airline.

Yes, you will probably never see either of them on any of those travel websites. Doesn't make any sense for them.

WN pulled all their flights off those ridiculous web travel sites, it costs too much money to do that. Some travel sites still advertised WN flights but WN found out and sent them a cease and desist letters and threatened a court fight.....

Southwest was available through Travelocity for quite a while, but they aren't anymore. They demanded to be removed from Orbitz because they found that Orbitz was giving bizarre routings that WN didn't like. Though I've seen Orbitz give bizarre routings on other airlines too, such as MCO-FLL-TPA-LAX on Delta.

I don't think we'll see Southwest or JetBlue on other travel web sites anytime soon, they're well known enough to do without it. It's also worth noting that neither airline has significant GDS participation... Southwest is bookable through Sabre only, JetBlue isn't bookable at all through a GDS.

Other airlines like ATA, AirTran, Spirit, and Frontier can be booked through the GDS and show up on various web sites.

Hawaiian717 -

Actually JetBlue is book-able in SABRE however the form of payment has to be sent directly to them in an OSI remark before the PNR is ended.

The thing with WN and B6 is that they wont pay a fee to the web service, so the web service will just charge a fee (much like they did with NW back when they said they would not pay). So, what is the point. People know they can get the lowest fare elsewhere. You can get B6 and WN prices off of things like SideStep, but they always direct you to the site of the airline

The main reason why isn't just because of the fee whereas its that in the case of JetBlue, they sell their fares to where they only make a profit of $12 a ticket on each ticket they sell. I think Independence is around $5-7 a ticket and at that rate, it merely takes too much of their revenue.
