LH To Deploy A346 To DEN

Sat Aug 28, 2004 5:02 pm

Effective the start of the winter season, Lufthansa will deploy the A346 on its daily Frankfurt-Denver flights. The flight schedule has been slightly altered to accomodate this aircraft change:

FRA DEN 31/1245 31/1515 LH446 C9 D9 Z8 Y9 B9 M9 H9 Q9 V9 W3 S0 [346]
DEN FRA 31/1705 01/1040 LH447 C9 D9 Z9 Y9 B9 M9 H9 Q9 V9 W9 S9 [346]

As a result of this change, DEN will no longer be served with First Class equiped aircraft, but will, however, receive the new Business Class.

I believe they shoudl keep using the same gate on Concourse A, but does anyone know if DEN is able to handle the 346, in terms of how big the aircraft is (wingspan), we shouldn't worry about the runway I believe its long enough.

This si great news for DEN, all we need is pics.

too bad, that DEN looses it's F service but since I was the only passenger there 2 times last year, I guess it's the only reasonable decision...

good news for DEN to get that big bird!

cheers,

Fantastic news. Can't wait to spot it.

BA did the same thing a while ago, they are now flying 777s with Club World, World Traveler Plus, and World Traveler when they used to fly ones with First Class, Club World, and World Traveler.

From my experiences on BA and LH, First class was always empty. However business class is always full.

Last time I flew BA, I flew World Traveler Plus and it was completely full also.

I would think for ski season that LH would find enough business to send the 744, as they've done previous ski seasons.

I would also imagine BA will reintroduce 744 service.

I would also guess that DEN is not a prime first class destination. So if LH could easily fill a 744 in business and tourist, maybe two 343 would be more useful. Maybe we will once see the awaited MUC-DEN flight.

As far as wingspan goes, the 744's wingspan fits at DEN, so the 346 should not have a problem. They have a 16,000 foot runway there, so that is not an issue either. Finally, I would guess that they have at least 1 gate there long enough for the 346, considering that they can fit them in the Alley gates between Bradley and T4 at LAX.

The gates at DEN in A concourse are plenty big (there are 4 international gates in A concourse that are owned by the city). They put fully loaded 744's in there all the time so I really do not see a problem with a 346.

Switching from a 744 to a 346 might be a sign that the long rumored DEN-MUC route may actually occur.

I can confirm that the few times I flew on LH to DEN I was the only pax in F, every time. The FAs on board also said that DEN never gets a lot of F traffic.

Great news from a Denver spotting perspective: we've had LH A342s, A343s, 744s, and now A346s. . .that's quite a cross section of a/c for just one route.

This is great news. But if it indicates a new route for LH, why wouldn't they make this change at the same time as introducing the new route? A346 proving runs?

I don't know that much about the O&D traffic figures and all of that but I wouldn't think of CO as a major skiing draw for the Germans. Naturally some will travel but the Europeans have plenty of good skiing on their side of the pond so only the rich would consider that. Just a thought...

Woah. Have you ever seen all the skiis being picked up at the luggage claim area after either the BA or LH flight get in during the ski season? I think you would chnage your mind.

Put simply, Colorado is a major destination for European Skiers. . .this is one of Denver's key selling points for European routes, direct and nonstop --then and now.

This is great news. Maybe I can get excited again about my home airport. Even if it is just for a few months until the 346 is fleeted in Denver. Should get a pretty good crowd out there on 10/31/04...

If it is a proving run for the 346, denver's high and dry location would help that out. I may have to swing by DEN to take a look at this bird.

There have been some changes on Lufthansa's Winter schedule to Denver:
LH 446/447 Frankfurt-Denver-Frankfurt will be operated by Boeing 747-400 in November, in December we hopefully will see an A340-600 on the route. Maybe the Boeing 747-400 will fly on the Denver-Route the whole winter schedule, as there are rumors that the A340-600 will be used on another route and so could not be used on the Denver-Route. Perhaps we will see the A340-600, which was planed for LH 446/447, on the Frankfurt-Cape Town run LH 576/577.

Seems to me like LH is short of A346 as read DABVF`s post...

@ Hirnie: That is not the problem.

Let's have a look on the planned A340-600-Flights in Winter 2004/2005:

from Frankfurt:
- 7/7 LH 740 to Osaka
- 7/7 LH 526 to Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile
- 7/7 LH 446 to Denver
- 7/7 LH 712 to Seoul
=> requires 5-6 A340-600

from Munich:
- 7/7 LH 726 to Shanghai and Canton
- 7/7 LH 772/782 to Bangkok and Saigon/Kuala Lumpur
=> requires 4 A340-600

As Lufthansa has 10 A340-600, the planned program for winter is practicable.

The Munich A346 operation, as it is right now, is very inefficient. There's extremely long ground times at MUC as both flights come in very early in the morning, and go out late at night. I can't imagine Lufthansa having 2 A346s sitting idle in MUC for a whole day every single day. I also don't think that MUC-FRA-MUC positioning flights are an option, as there would be 2 of them every day in both directions. So I think we haven't seen the definitive version of the A346 operation for this winter yet. Something must be in the pipeline to overcome this utilization inefficiency.
