A3XX Flight Deck

Sun Feb 27, 2000 12:52 pm

Does anybody have an idea about how the A3XX's cockpit will or would look like? I've always wondered this. Do you think Airbus will follow its tradition of common cockpit design or will it be a completely different thing?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Weird But Traditional...

Sun Feb 27, 2000 1:49 pm

What will First Class passengers on the new A3XX have to gaze at? Nothing more aesthetic than the rear side of the dual-lane staircase rising to the upper floor.
Asuming Airbus ever gets this behemoth off the ground, the flight-deck, commonly known as the cockpit, will be located between the two floors, with four steps rising into it from the first floor. This placement cuts off either deck from having a 747's traditional forward-facing windows and curved seating, and bumps the first class cabin back away from the nose.
The cockpit itself will be almost identical to an A340's, with 'joystick' navigation, large windows, lots of LCDs, and a general glass appearence. Both pilot and co-pilot will enjoy tray tables folding out from either beside or in front of them (I'm not sure which), and the width will mean that for the first time on just about any airliner, there will be room to stand up and walk around between the seats.
Airbus has created a visual image of the cockpit (one of several hundred) on their A3XX CD, which is a VERY showy computer-graphic based tour through the new gargantuan flight machine. I'm not sure how you can get it, but if you do, there are two views of the cockpit included.
