The delay was caused to weather and the RNC.
The delays in EWR
the last few days have been weather driven and have had nothing to do with the RNC.
Yesterday was a combination TS
Gaston and the weather ahead of the approaching frontal system. Delays started when the loss of routes south through Washington Centers airspace. EWR
have three different arrival flows into the NY area and the EWR
streams were combined due to weather. That same weather also blocked departures via J75. As the morning progressed the weather developing along the front started to shut off the west departure routes out of the NY area due to the route closures and eastbound traffic deviating into the departure routes. In an attempt to limit the number of arrivals and limit the volume of traffic Ground Delay Programs were put into place for EWR
. Since the issue was an en route and not terminal one it didn't work. Departure delays out of EWR
started to increase past 120 minutes. So Ground stops were used to do just that, stop the traffic into the NY metros and give them a chance to flush the departures. Only problem is that when you stop everything the demand per hour increases behind the stop and so when the Ground Delay Program is revised the average delay goes up and the program end time is extended out. Basically it make a real mess of things and once the delays like this are put into the system recovery is very limited to none until the initiatives expire
