Ryanair In Talks With MRS!

Tue Aug 31, 2004 8:12 pm

YES!!!!!!!!!

Just saw it on the news (France3). Ryanair executives have been visiting MRS to talk about starting operations. One problem could be the high landing fees and taxes at MRS. The news however quoted that the government is looking at lowering the fees after receiving complaints from AF, Easyjet and Ryanair.

I hope this works.

KL911,

Would Ryanair consider MRS even though they already serve MPL and FNI which are both less than 70 miles from MRS. Or do you think they'd merge both these operations into MRS if they were succesful at lobbying for lower landing fees?

7LBAC111,

Nimes is very important to Ryanair. In January they will start a 3rd daily flight.
And distance shouldn't be a problem, in the west of France they fly to many small airports all very close to eachother.

MRS can be used to go to the Provence or Cote d'Azur. Two big holiday destinations not yet served by FR.

The thing is, I don't see FR and Easyjet compete head on on the same route. Easyjet has the MRS-LGW, MRS-ORY and MRS-CDG flights. I hope it will be a DUB-MRS flight for FR. Could as well be Frankfurt Hahn...

We'll see...

Actually, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Ryanair compete 'head on' with EasyJet. Haven't they recently started serving LTN and are looking at more destinations in Spain in response to EasyJets success there?

Who knows KL911, you might get that MRS-STN flight after all  Smile

I would have thought that since FR already serve FNI and MPL, they'd complete a triangle and go for service to TLN (used to be served by Buzz, but not very well) - TLN is closer to the Cote D'Azur and St Tropez, and has rubbish service - daily BA to LGW and some AF flights to ORY.

JGPH1A,

Yes, TLN makes more sense, much cheaper and it can be called St Tropez, always good for marketing. FLYECO, the French LCC that was supposed to start operations this year was planning to fly out of TLN as well. But I think that LCC will never start...

Ryanair looked at TLN many years ago. MRS would be crazy to go with FR, as they are too big an airport with way too many major airline customers to annoy by offering reduced charges to one carrier.

K911. exactly. Why then offer stupidly low rates to attract FR?

Trouble is of course, MRS can't offer lower rates just to FR - it's publicly owned (by the city, I believe). Unless they want another Strasbourg-style court case.

It's owned by the CCI, Chambre de Commerce et Industrie. ( hope I spelled it right..)

Anyway, that was the interesting part of the interview: They want to lower landing fees and taxes to all LCC's to atrract more pax and get more jobs.
I don't know if it's only for LCC's or also for mainline carriers.

If FR does begin serving MRS, then I suspect the carrier will fly from STN, HHN, CIA, CRL, PIK and BGY. I am not too sure about GRO and NYO. Would the carrier begin BVA-MRS? I don't know, but I'll say no. DUB doesn't seem that likely, at least initially.

MRS are building (or planning to build) a LCC terminal to cater for the discount carriers. I presume FR were down there to investigate what is on offer. My bets are on EZY, who dont mind paying some charges and value a relationship with the airport.

Building a new terminal means some money to be recouped - something which FR wont be interested in paying for. They have the same problem at Stansted where BAA wants the airlines to pay for new infrastructure. They had the same problem in Dublin about eight years ago when extra capacity had to be added.
