United Upgrades PEK Service

Tue Aug 31, 2004 9:48 pm

Starting October 30 SFO PEK service on UA gets upgraded from a 777 to a 747. The aircraft is in flight from 30 to the 31st of October then overnights before returning! There for the return flight doesn't start with the -400 till November 1. Great news for UA and China!

Does this flight originate in SFO, LAX or ORD?

It's not an upgrade for coach passengers as there is no PTV IFE. That means I have to read a book, or AirlinerWorld.

Unfortunately I can see more services going back to 744 on Asian routes, and no IFE in Economy. The only good thing is that you don't have the 5 across in economy of the 777.

It does have it's pro's and con's, but for UAL these flights are packed every day. I am trying to go on the 1st or 2nd of October and it doesn't look good for a non-rev.

It will originate in SFO.
ORD will stay a 777 for now.

I'm surprised it wasn't already 744, or for that matter, quad-744. I know for a fact they could fill them... (and in the future, will).

it makes sense to put a 744 from nov onwards because in winter traffic demand between the two cities is huge and especially during the chinese new year...ual would want to uplift as many pax as it can and mint $$$ whilst doing it...so business wise this move is well thought of and very sensible.

only problem is that like someone pointed out the IFE of the UALs B 744s are inferior to its B 777 fleet.

Whilst it may be an upgrade in pax capacity,it is not an upgrade for 'Y' class passengers, thats for sure!

and its 777 has 18" seat width in Y, whilst its 747 has 17"...hardly "upgrade" at all.

Don't forget also, the lease rates on the 744 are cheaper than the 777, pay rates are the same... so as long as the passengers are there to pay for the extra fuel burn, UA will continue to shift to 744's.

Just a minor correction...the -400 fleet is owned so as long as the pilots are being paid the same now the extra cost of the fuel burn is more then made up when you look at the lease rates of the 777. The last 4 whales come out of the desert this winter and will be in service soon!

Wow seems that an increasing number of B 747s are flying for UA. Traffic picking up dramatically? Or simply because of leasing arrangements?

the 5 across in economy of the 777

Well that means only 1 person on each role has to climb over 2 passengers

They did in the past. Before 9/11 SFO-PEK was a B744 but UA then discontinued the route. It was good to see UA re-enter this market again and good to see that the load factors are very high.

I flew SFO-PEK back in 2000 on a B744. Its manageable without PTVs.

There was no non-stop SFO-PEK service back in 2000.
Probably connected through NRT. The SFO-PEK service just started this summer.

Always good to hear good news from UA or any carrier.
