UA To Start ORD-VIE?

Hi,
I recently read in an aviation magazine that UA was evaluating the possibility of a nonstop ORD-VIE flight with its own equipment. Has anybody heard or read anything similar? OS operated the route for a short time but apparently it didn't do too well as they axed it after 9/11 ....

It would make much more sense for OS to operate this and for UA to codeshare.

I am sure once one of them has the route operating it will be a codeshare. Wouldn't a UA flight be able to feed into the OS hub for onward traffic, just as easily as a OS flight?

The first question we have to ask is how the O&D there is on this route. OS' cancellation of this route should answer the question. IIRC they were using a mixture of A332s and A342s on this route, probably smaller than anything UA would use. The next question is whether ORD is a good connecting point for those trying to get to VIE. I would argue that it is not ideal at this time. Note that OS serves IAD but not ORD. IAD makes more sense geographically (and delay-wise) than ORD, and I think UA wants to route traffic through IAD. Star partner LH also offers plenty of options for those originating in a plethora of American cities.
I can't decide whether I miss the tulip or the bowling shoe more

Indeed international operations is were the profit margin is currently for the larger US airlines. Hence UA is certainly looking at additional flying beyond what it has announced allready.
A good assumption is that this most new flying will be tied into allready established STAR alliance member airports.

The route was served by OS for quite a while (I'm not exactly sure how long but at least 7-8 years); they even used to fly with their A-310s via LHR to ORD!

I think this move might make sense since most of IAD-VIE-IAD OS-fligths are usually pretty full! Besides OS offers great connecting oportunities for flights to Eastern Europe and the Middle East! I could strongly imagine UA flying out of ORD to VIE but with a 767-300!

The route was served by OS for quite a while (I'm not exactly sure how long but at least 7-8 years); they even used to fly with their A-310s via LHR to ORD!

As far as I know, the ORD route started as a replacement of the ATL route, which was abandoned after Austrian switched from the Qualiflyer Group to the Star Alliance. At least for quite some years before that OS didn't serve ORD. It is possible that it did so in the 70s, 80s or early 90s though.

In the mid 90s, OS served only 2 destinations in the US: JFK and IAD. The IAD flight used to operated VIE-GVA-IAD and later VIE-ZRH-IAD and was operated in cooperation with Swissair. There was a daily JFK flight, complemented with some extra flights during the summer season. But certainly no ORD connection at that time.

As for the possibility of a UA-operated ORD-VIE connection, I think this might very well be possible, but likely not during this winter season. It is more likely that UA-OS would announce such a flight for the Spring of 2005, probably operated by a UA B763, which, incidentally is smaller than OS' A342 that earlier operated the route. I think this route might work. Remember Delta-Austrian operated VIE-ATL as well.

OS has no long-haul aircraft to spare. So any long-haul flying, except the new route announced to NGO in Feb '05, would have to be on a Star partner.

ORD & VIE route probably has very little O&D but huge amounts of connecting traffic because of the excellent OS feed from Eastern Europe and within US for UA.

Another flight UA may start is a flight from ORD to ICN. I believer UA had a flight to Seoul back in the 90s but slashed it quickly. With Asiana onboard Star it could a route in the future.
It's interesting to note OZ and KE operate a slew of flight from Seoul to US mainland but UA is the only one from SFO.

Austrian had 2 different ORD routings in the 90´s, the first was VIE - CPH - ORD with A310, the second was VIE - ORD with various equipment and nonstop. I took this flight very often and it was allways full.

This story of United Airlines eveluating ORD - VIE is around some weeks now.

Transatlantic flights are no cash cows, so i guess they go where they can make the money - in Asia. Besides Nagoya 3x per week, the re-start of Shanghai, Hongkong and Mumbay are rumored as well as a re-start of Johannesburg/SA and probably offering both Australian rotations on a daily basis.

In the mid 90s, OS served only 2 destinations in the US: JFK and IAD.

They also served MIA and MCO through Lauda. MCO was canceled in the late 90s and MIA with ORD after 9.11. There has been murmurs of OS coming back to MIA in the future (without the MUC stop), but I wouldn't count on it.

Carpethead: BOTH KE and OZ also fly to SFO as well as SQ and UA. UA and SQ fly the route daily and KE and OZ about three - four days a week. Interestingly, all four carriers use 777-200ERs on the route.

I doubt UA will add a ORD-ICN flight again since UA must be running short on aircraft with ORD-PVG starting soon and possibly SFO-CAN next year. I think it's more likely for OZ to start a ICN-ORD flight. Perhaps when they get more 777s ?

Actually OS has some spare long-haul aircraft in the name of Lauda-Air.
Lauda Air is getting back 3 leased-out 767-300 in the coming months, and as of Oct. OS and NG flight operation will be combined (a kind of merger of the two airlines), and the long-haul fleet of Lauda Air will be repainted in OS-colors. The beginning of this can be seen already as Lauda restarted the flights to Shanghai (OS flew before) and additional JFK service with it's 767-300.
