Kai Tak Land Usage

Thu Sep 02, 2004 11:34 am

After looking at the most current pictures of this past airport, I wondered what the plans were for this prime real estate. Are they planning on using it for future devolpment in this crowded city?

actually i hve not heard any news about any land reclamation around the runway.. but since i m away for study in the states.. i am not that updated on HKG's news..

but i believe HKG government has a project to change the water quality around the victoria harbor.., with this project on going.. i doubt the HKG government will want to reclaim the land.. at least for now...

The HK government has had some grand plans to redevelop Kai Tak and much of the surrounding areas back when the property market in HKG was sizzling. Now that the bubble had bursted, there seems to be no hurry to redevelop the place. Instead, bits and pieces of land on the old airport property were parceled out apparently on short-to-medium term leases for various purposes.

The land there will have to wait for a while before new buildings will be built because the soil is quite toxic there due to prolonged years of underground fuel storage . right now the land is not suitable for human settlement.

As for the gap between the runway and the shore, it was planned to be filled originally, however, now it seems that it would unlikely be filled because some new laws forbidding the filling of land without urgent need have been passed. Personally I think this is great because at least there will be a bit of historical relics left.

I heard that is where we would be hosting 2012 East Asian Games (Kowloon City), something else is in store for Kwun Tong side. So far, it is where KMB park their buses (thanks for the underground pipers) and the immigrantion department training school (ex-GFS hanger).
