Full On Emergency @ WLG, Possible Crash Landing?

Thu Sep 02, 2004 11:38 am

I have just got back from WLG and as I was leaving several Ambulances and Fire Engines were arriving under full lights and sirens. I stayed for a while and i asked an Aviation Security officer about whats happening and she told me a plane could be making a crash landing so the Emergency services and the airport rescue are all on full alert. Roads around the airport are being closed by the police.

I was at WLG at about 2pm because i was on my study break. I left to walk back to College at about 2.20pm when I was told of a possible crash landing. By 3.30pm all the emergency vehicles had gone.

Probably a hydraulic failure, in flight engine shut down, bird strike, you name it that would make this kind of response required. The a/c probably landed and then taxied off the active and into a stand or was towed into a hanger. Just a bit of over drama on the part of the security officer.

Just my 2¢

Thanks again.

Probably this thread is BOLLOCKS and should be closed.... JBirdAV8r... IF you can prove that this thread is bollocks then please do so. As you were not at WLG as the Emergency was unfolding then I don't think that you can.

Gee you're funny Ultrpig! Did you think of that yourself?

I've seen numerous emergencies here where the a/c has landed safely and then just taxied off to the terminal.
Better to be fully prepared than sorry afterwards.

Having said that though, a full emergency will be declared at WLG under circumstances that may not be justified at other airports due to:

* the short runway (1835 metres).
* no runway end safety areas (or whatever they're called).
* proximity of trolley bus wires, a major gas main and an arterial road at the northern end of the runway and a ring road at the southern end with a steep drop onto both.
* sea at both ends of the runway.
* high ground on the northern approach combined with often gusty conditions.

777ER, you must be at the same school as my son, Rongotai College.

Just read todays paper. The plane involved was the Wellington's Life Flight Trust Air Ambulance, a Metro Liner. The Air Ambulance was on a flight to Hastings with 2 patients and 9 passengers including the pilots. The plane on approach to Hastings when the landing gear would not fully extend. The pilot decided to return to WLG as WLG is better prepared for Emergency Landings. While en-route back to WLG the planes landing gear problem was fixed but all the emergency services remained @ WLG till the plane had landed safly. The plane landed without any problems. Once the landing gear was fixed the flight continued to Hastings
