Osaka KIX Marks 10th Anniversary

Fri Sep 03, 2004 12:34 pm

Tomorrow (9/4) marks Osaka Kansai's 10th anniversary since opening.

The airport is famous for its sinking island because it was reclaimed from the ocean and the bottom is like clay. Similar act to applying pressure on a sponge. Let's see how far it can be squeezed (sink).
Thus, it is in debt by over 1 trillion yen (over 10 billion USD).
It's single runway is not even close to capacity yet they are building a second runway.
The new Central Airport in Nagoya opens in Feb 2005 which will give cargo and passengers additional choices in the region.
The passenger terminal is still in great shape. The old Itami airport is still open despite protests by local residence. Plus there will be a new Kobe airport on the other side of the bay that will open in 2005 or 2006.
At least there are no NIMBY protests, but what the heck are people in this region thinking.
