Local Airport?

Sat Sep 04, 2004 9:46 pm

Having read umpteen posts about the viability of different transatlantic routes from the UK. I wondered if Americans differed from the British in their perception as what constitutes a "local" airport.
Also if there is a difference does this different view point extend to the airline companies themselves ?
Would be nice to get views from both sides of the pond.

Well, when I think of "local" airport, I think of an airport near by. For instance, since I live in NYC, I would consider EWR, JFK, and LGA "local" airports.

Hello Mutley35,

my local airport would be AMS, because it's just a 20 minutes drive from where I live. Besides that it's the place where I work, so I am a local at my local airport. Big grin

This is one my favorite local airports:

Vansant, Erwinna, PA
http://www.vansantairport.com/

To paraphrase part of their site, on a nice clear day you can go soaring above it and see Philadelphia to one side, beautiful Bucks County below you, and New York in the other direction.

I work at this one, just a few miles away:

Doylestown Airport, Doylestown, PA
http://www.doylestownairport.com/

There are over 40 airports within 25NM of my house.

To me, the "local airport" is a general aviation place where people can learn to fly, and on any given Sunday afternoon you can walk into the pilot's lounge and chat with 100,000 combined flying hours of airport bums.

I have three different airports in my local area. I consider my local airport to be one that has commercial service.

Toledo Express Airport: http://www.toledoexpress.com

Toledo Metcalf(the original Toledo express airport way before the 1950s): http://www.crowair.com/metcalf.htm

and my favorite...and where I am learning to fly

Toledo Suburban: http://www.suburbanaviation.com

For those who really care, toledo is in Ohio and Toledo suburban is located in Lambertville, MI.

I live on Long Island and for me my local airport is ISP. ISP is only 20 mins away! In reality though, when I want to travel to KOA I'de rather make one or two stops than 3 or 4. ISP-ATL-LAX-HNL-KOA or EWR-HNL-KOA/JFK-LAX-KOA. Islip is nice but there is a permitter and therefore there are a lot of connections recessary sometimes.

Ok I think what I was trying to get at has been lost somewhere. What I was actually asking is what constitutes a local airport in terms of distance/ travel time to most people.
Just wondered if that distance /travel time was viewed differently dependent on the country you are from.
To give an example I live 1 hr from BHX which I term local, LHR and LGW are approximately 2 1/2 to 3 hrs away which I do not term local.Yet I have heard people talk of their local airport being 2 hrs away.
So my question being not which airport is closest to you but what distance/ travel time do you see as "local".

DRO not very far away.

That's about it unless I count telluride at a two hour drive.

A local airport in the U.S. probably means something different depending where on the globe you sit. In Europe, I would imagine the distance would be less than that in the U.S.
Less than an hour is probably local.
But for many, like in SoCal, Florida, the Northeast, they might have 3 or more airports within just one hour driving time.

Safetydude: If you can get to EWR from NYC in 30 minutes, you are either taking a helicopter or traveling at two in the morning.

Until recently LTN was my local airport and never considered CVT as there was no scheduled services, now Thomsonfly operate out of CVT it's my closest.

I am very central to a number of airports but due to the road networks and motorways an airport further away may be quicker to get to for myself from Brackley in Northamptonshire.

CVT- 26miles (30mins)
LTN - 35miles (45-1hr Drive)
BHX - 40miles (40-1hr)
EMA - 55miles (1hr)
LHR - 60miles (50mins)

FDL - Fond du Lac, WI - Fond du Lac County Airport - 27 miles
RYV - Watertown, WI - Watertown Municipal - 27 miles
OSH - Oshkosh, WI - Whittman Regional - 35 miles
MSN - Madison, WI - Dane County Regional - 44 miles

Funflyer,

Where around MHT do you live? For most of the year that is one of my local airports, along with ASH and Pepperell for watching the skydiving entertainment.

Well, here in Chicago the notion of a local airport is more of an issue. I would consider ORD and MDW to be my local airports as I'm sure most Chicagoans would. However, some also consider MKE (Milwaukee, WI) to be a local airport as well, although most who form this opinion live in far to semi-far northern suburban Ilinois where MKE and ORD would probably be equidistant to their homes. But for some, no matter where they live, MKE seems to be a good alternative to fly out of whenever flights from both airports get sold out.
Its better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than be in the air wishing you were on the ground. Fly safe!

Depends on what you're talking about. My "local" airport when talking about an airport with commercial service is CMH, about 55 minutes away.

When I talk about an airport that's actually local to me...
-OH36 (Riverside Airport...less than 5 minutes, but not worth going to)
-42I (Parr Airport...5 minutes. Run by a great group of people that we've known for as long as I can remember. http://www.airnav.com/airport/42I)
-KZZV (Zanesville Municipal...15-20 minute drive http://www.airnav.com/airport/KZZV)

Mine would be

MAN 12 miles (20 minutes across town)
LPL 25 miles (40 minutes or 30 if in a rush)
LBA 40 miles (1 hour)
BLK 40 miles (1 hour)
BHX 80 miles (1.5 hours)
HUY 80 miles (1.5 hours)
EMA 80 miles (3 hours due to roads)

Manchester Barton is only a couple of miles away but that's a grass field.

My local airport is 15 minutes drive from my home (Momona Airport, DUD). Unfortunately it is quite "small" in size compared some airports you guys live close to, ie. you just couldn't compare DUD to JFK, DFW or ORD. For example, ATR72s and B737s are the largest a/c that fly into DUD. If I want to do some "serious" spotting, I go to CHC (4 hours by road) where I'll see many 767's and maybe the odd 747 if I'm really lucky.

That's one of the negatives of living way down under in the South Pacific.

I live on Long Island so my local airport is Macarthur Airport (ISP). I live about 3 miles from the airport and can be there in about 5 minutes or so.
