Will NW Install PTVs On Its 744s In Y?

Sun Sep 05, 2004 9:10 am

Dose anyone know if NW is considering to update its 744 Y class with a seat similar to the A330 seats. If they are not planning this now, I think they might in about 5 years.

What do you know, or think might happen.

Please don't get mad at me for some reason.  Sad Be kind!

All flights have great IFE...get yourself a window seat, thats something no PTV can beat! flew 808 Pacific an Atlanic

My guess is no. I don't know why, but I just don't see an airline like NW putting in PTV's. IMO, they've always seemed like an airline a little behind in time. It's only just until recently they started PTV's on the A332. Yet other airlines have had this technology for years now.

I asked that question when I went through A330 training back in November. We were playing with the training modules of the MAS IFE system. And our instructor just shrugged. Only thing I can tell you is, When ever NW has the money for it. If you fly on the 400 often, complain to the company. Maybe that will speed it up. Us crew would love to see it as well. Keeps the passengers from getting up all the time Big grin.

UAL had plans to do major upgrades in economy class, including PTVs, but it was cancelled.

Once US airlines start making profits again and are stable, they will most likely eventually put in PTVs - but it could be a long process, as by the time airlines get around to it, some planes will be on their way out.

NW doesn't seem real keen on IFE in general- look at all the A320 series A/C they received with no IFE at all. It's possible, but I don't think I'd hold my breath.

NW's position has been that like MRTC, they can't prove that PTV's sell tickets so they are staying on the sidelines. They also don't like the fact that none of the systems comes OEM on the aircraft thus another party to bug-fix with. NW would also like the seatback infastucture to go wireless and eliminate all the cabling.

With the strong load factor. I don't see why they would need to install something which will add more weight and generate more heat plus maintenance nightmares.

What strong load factors do NW have w/ thier 747's. How is the load factor on JFK-NRT. IMO, I wouldn't go w/ them considering you could get such better service on airlines like ANA or JAL. Even AA or UAL would beat IFE and legroom.

Perhaps you could tell me what IFE there is on any 320? B6 has PTVs, and a few other airlines have those horrible LCDs.

IFE was not that big of a thing when NWA ordered its planes (other than the 330s).

I have heard it is very high, filled with both cargo and passengers.

All that needs to happen is for one or two non-LCCs to offer IFE and the rest will follow, but do not hope for that day any time soon.  Big grin

They are pretty strong, the stats speak for themselves.

True, very true. However I think NW is cheaper than those airlines, hence many people fly them for that reason.

Even AA or UAL would beat IFE and legroom.

I hope that is a statement based on facts and experience. From my experience NW beats UA in service and has the same legroom(non Economy Plus) and entertainment (on the 744 which is what you are talking about!).

Regarding AA, yes they have better legroom and a PTV, but they do not have such an extensive route structure in Asia. Therefore you can not compare. It like comparing CO with Virgin Atlantic. A few similar routes and that's it.

COEWR2587,

You seem to be very vocal about your disgust with NW. I was wondering why? I do a lot of flying on CO and NW and have my fair share of rotten stories with both airlines. Why are you so bitter towards NW?

Well looking back on the past couple days and looking forward the next couple days, the LF has been 100% every seat filled.

As for PTV's, eventually they will probably get them if the airline industry gets back to larger profits. As for domestic, I wouldnt be surprised to see it get put on by next summer, why, well there have been rumors about it and SkyTeam may have something to say about it. Many of the A320's are equipped with video screen and the ones that dont can be fitted with them. Of course the DC-9's wont have it, but i have heard about Audio for the DC-9. 757's and all as you know all have tv's, they dont use them, but they got them. So its just a matter of time, and when the 7.... Big grin arrive, those will likely have PTV's, sorry cant tell you what that is. Airlines do watch these boards.

NW used to have PTVs on every single seat if I remember correctly.

Actually not very many. I haven't seen one in years. I usually fly 3-5 day 320 trips and haven't come across one in a while. There's like maybe a few of the 320's that might still have a video monitor over the odd seat, but those are inoperable and practically useless. An entire system would have to be installed. The entire IFE control modules were removed from A320's that had them, and no system was installed on the subsequent 320's picked up later. My guess is that IFE on the 319/320 won't happen for a long time and the DC9 have no chance of any kind entertainment system. The 757's will most likely have there's reactivated, with some of the older 75's having some updates put on them.

If you were the CEO of Northwest and your carrier had the highest load factor in the industry both domestic and international, would you spend millions of dollars installing PTV's?

Keep in mind that no study has ever shown that PTV's equals more passengers!!!

Jetjack-
I was referring to those that are equipped as in the system shows A32V. Many if not all of those come to Denver, and then when I was just looking at loads to ATL, those 320's are listed as A32V. Everytime that I fly it always seems that I get on one of those. Obviously the baby busses dont have them, but all the A320's ive been on always have them.

Calm down everyone. PTVs for non-LCCs is a way to enhance a product, thus getting a better reputation and having more loyal customers.

While I happen to like NW and its product, just because an airline has high loads does not mean the customers like the airline.

As I said, in about five years. NW Will probably have more money by then anyway.

"I wouldn't go w/ them considering you could get such better service on airlines like ANA or JAL. Even AA or UAL would beat IFE and legroom."

Yeah, your right; most airlines that fly trans pacific routes do have PTVs with better seats. NW may eventually lose customers if the prices for the other airlines are the same or even lower than theirs.

Another thought I have is about NW installing the new WBC in the 744s, they should have maybe replaced Y class too. I bet they thought about it.
