Near Collision Over MAN!

Mon Sep 06, 2004 7:12 am

Hi Guys,

Info: I live about 10 miles from MAN, In Atherton(Northwest of MAN). From my bedroom window I can see Aircraft capturing to Localizer for 24L/R, Also I can see Aircaft leaving the Rosun hold. Cant wait till I get my first ever proper camera, The images I could captures are unreal!

Now to the sighting:-

Tonight (05/09/04) around 10.00pm local time I witnessed two aircraft, As what can only be described as a near collision over Atherton. No1 Aircraft had just left the ROSUN hold, about 10 miles from capturing the localizer 24R, And No2 aircraft had just took off from 24R flying in a northwest direction. It must of been a near collision because No2 Aircraft had to change direction to miss No1 Aircaft. Interesting!

All your comments a welcome.

Hard to really comment on what you saw, my guess is that it wasn't anything serious just an aircraft changing course to avoid other traffic, doesn't sound major. I live right under ROSUN hold, the arrival and departure proceedures for MAN must be pretty well known and adhered to, situations like that probably happen all the time in busy skies.

Catatonic.

Why would your town be named after her, and in what way is traffic in your location wierd.

Why would your town be named after her, and in what way is traffic in your location wierd.

1. cos the name Royston Vasey was already taken

2. Cos theres low flying light aircraft from nearby airfields, traffic from liverpool and traffic for manchester all flying low and seem to be quite close

Catatonic

Let me help you.

You've said something very, very stupid - suggested that an area of Wigan was named after a woman who (with Ian Brady) was perhaps the most notorious child murderer of the 20th century in the UK.

That a town would be named in this way is obviously as ridiculous a comment as you are likely to read here, or anywhere else.

So, what was your comment meant to be: A poor attempt at humour? Irony ? Sarcasm ? Ill researched local history ?

I look forward to your answer.

I live in Horwich, no idea what it is named after? Any ideas?

Aircraft at peak times can get busy overhead, they often appear alot closer together from the ground, but they are still safe.

Diesel1,

Had your reply yet?

BMI701EGCC,

From my experience after piloting commercial airline airplanes for the last few years I can say confidently that what you see from outside may not always be what actually it is.Even from the cabin its not possible to understand whats happening most of the times.

And if we add it was night time when you witnessed which it will make it very difficult(and tricky) to see exactly how much difference between two aircraft.I think the only accurate answer would be given by the pilots of those two aircraft.Other than that any comment will be just "wild guesses".I also have to add that there have been a number of reasons to abort an approach.A climbing aircraft in 10 NM should be way to high than an aircraft at 10 NM on an approach. There are SID's(standart instrument departures) generally that the departing aircraft follows and SID's shouldn't bring departing and arriving aircraft into collision courses.

I guess I did make a lot of wild guesses"  Smile Have fun.WING

Or he was just following ATC orders?  Big grin

Its very difficult to tell how high aircraft are from the ground, especially when they're miles away from you. Say the two aircraft were at 7000 and 8000 feet, they would be legally seperated and to anyone on the ground would look extremely close as they approached each other, the turns they took were, I imagine, coincidental to their positions. I certainly haven't heard anything about any incident/"near miss" at MAN in the past few days.

I'm not slurring anyone, I just know its hard to judge, I've been fooled myself before now by these optical illusions.

I live on the outskirts to the east of Stoke on Trent,on the way to Alton Towers and we're pretty high up (can see welsh mountains on a clear day) and we have traffic south departing MAN (old CONGA1R) and traffic, mainly freight on approach to EMA, and also traffic, mainly EZY B737's for some reason, inbound to LPL. Can look a bit hectic over my village sometimes!

Hi Guys,

WING, I Know what SIDs are STARs are WING. I'm a trainee private pilot(At Barton)  Smile . Anyway what are "Standart Instrumental Departures"  Big grin

Maybe No2 a/c was descending into another a/p.

Thanks for the comments anyway, Much appreciated. BTW The town of Wigan was named after a man who owned a barbers shop in the centre of town, Who made wings. I forget the whole of the story, Studied it in History one time!

Anyway can we get a list off all the A.net members who live near Atherton or Bolton(Gtr Manchester), Maybe we could have a meet at MAN sometime?
