Most Stupid Question?

Mon Feb 28, 2000 12:36 pm

This is for people who work ON a plane, like F/A or flight crews - or gate agents - or people who have contact with the flying public.

What is the stupidest question you've been asked by a passenger relating to the plane itself or the flight? And what was your answer?

I just wondered how ignorant some of the public out there is about aviatrion & planes....................

I work at a small store at Boston Logan's Terminal C. A large part of the travelling public walks by my store, and for some reason they all seem to think I'm an Information Centre. I get asked all sorts of questions, mostly though, "Where's the ATM?" or "Where are there telephones?" But the other day a guy came up to me asking where gate 38C was. Now as I knew there was no Gate 38C, I asked to look at his ticket. I then had to explain to him that C31 was his gate and 38C was his seat assignment. I got a little chuckle out of that one.

I was once on a Philippine A330-300 and a Philippino guy near me asked the F/A if this was a 747 or a DC-10.

The F/A in a very polite way said `No sir its an Airbus A330' !!!

I think he was trying to impress his friends .

Well I don't work in the business, but I do have a story...

I was at a gate 2 years ago writing down and taking pictures of the aircrafts taxiing around. Then a family of 8 or so came up to me (they said I looked like I would know) and asked me to settle a dispute between them, as to wether the AirTran DC-9-30 they were about to board (directly out the window) was 1) jet, 2) prop, or 3) neither.

It was hard to not burst out laughing to say the least!

Actually, I think a lot of people haven't a clue about flying. I'm not a pilot, but on one of many flights to New Mexico a teenage guy beside me asked if I thought we'd go faster than the speed of sound. It was a 757, so I kindly told him no. (I thought it might be amusing to tell him, "Yes - but if we do you won't live to tell about it".)

I just love stupid stories! This has nothing to do with aviation, but I do have a law enforcement stupid story. I dispatch for a large, rural county and we have three ambulance services in our jurisdiciton. One is volunteer and we page them. The other two are in neighboring cities, which are in different counties, and we phone them. One is based out of a hospital. I was dispatching for an MVA and I called the ER to get an ambulance rolling. I identified myself, "This is the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and I need an ambulance." The nurse said, "Well, have you called 911?" I said, "Lady, I AM 911!!!" She must've been having a major brain fart.

I'm not in the business, but I have a story that cracked me up when I heard it.
A friend of mine once saw a plane on finals, when she saw the strobe on the wing. Thinking that she was smart, she said "Look, the plane is going to turn now."
As if it was a car...
Just goes to show that some poeple know sqwat about aviation, but think they know everything.

I was waiting for Canadian Airlines flight CP7 at Vancouver for Hong Kong. There were some problems with Vancouver's cargo that day, so this flight was delayed 4 hours. I took out my camera and began photographing planes landing on RWY 26R. Then, a Cathay Pacific 747-400 in old livery landed. A child on my side asked his dad, (in Chinese) "Dad, is that Eva Air!?" The dad wouldn't reply, but he repeated, "Is that Eva Air!? It's Eva Air!! It's green!!" The dad then said, "Yeah, yeah... it's Eva Air."

I thought the Cathay old livery has two big words "CATHAY PACIFIC" on the fuselage, and Eva Air has two big words "EVA AIR" too. How can it be confused!?
