India Open Skies Update

Tue Sep 07, 2004 4:50 am

Here is the update to the Indian Govt's open skies policy for this winter :

a) LUFTHANSA on Monday announced that it would take up the open sky offer and operate a daily flight between Bangalore and Frankfurt.

*B 747-437B (Sean) would know for sure which aircraft would operate on this route...I would guess A 343 as they currently fly this aircraft to BLR. Btw...how good are LHs First class loads to and from BLR?

b) GULF AIR will take up the offer and are in the process of evaluating it right now. They operate to seven cities here and are in the process of firming up which of these cities we should increase flights to during the period.

c) KUWAIT AIRWAYS is also examining various options. The airline is examining the situation and depending on demand and aircraft availability, we would consider making use of the offer made by the Government," said Mr Pran Dasan, Manager (Sales and Marketing), Indian Subcontinent.

We use the FRA-BLR nonstop often where I work, so I'm surprised that its not currently operating.

It is surprising that LUFTHANSA wants to make the FRA-BLR daily when it is supposed to be a daily joint operation with Air India soon

Currently, LH flies 5 times a week to BLR from FRA nonstop with A 343s.

It used to be daily last winter during open skies 03-04 and possibly the winter b4 that too.

Whats the latest regarding their HYD flights?

As Behramjee said about FRA-BLR. You can quote as you like. I do the following:

I type < i > (without space), then copy/paste the text to cite, the < / i > to end the citation..

Whats the latest regarding their HYD flights?

Interesting question, I would like to know, too. Is this announcement, that AI might start flights HYD-FRA in cooperation with LH to be taken serious (afaik they said sth about this winter, but this seems bizarre to me)?

Then, maybe Sean can update us about whether BOM-NBO-LOS will take off this winter finally, and whether there are prospects for the 'earlier this year euphoric discussed' proposed route BOM-JBG-GRU... and: what about YYZ/SFO?? Any updates when this will happen??

Sorry, too many questions at a time  Smile

Doesn't all this depend on whether AI gets its new planes, which seems rather unlikely for some time to come ?

Unluckily not. Sean has pointed out that the Government OS Policies were rather unilateral and did only favor Foreign competitors, since AI could not use bilaterals

If your question was referred to the HYD expansion: the anwer is of course yes Big grin

How is the recent leasing process for the 17+3 going? Any updates?

HYD would be amazing!
I remember reading that both BA and LH were planning service to HYD but I believe Sean quickly put to rest those rumours.

I have a feeling the runway at HYD is not quite long enough. AND there is no reason to expand Begumpet if in a few years time there will be a sparkling new airport at Shamshabad.

BTW, how is that project coming along?

Wilbur:
[over radio] Mugwomp tower, Mugwomp tower, this is Albatross One Three requesting permission to land. Over?

Jake:
Albatross? [Jake flips over the checkerboard to a chart that has various bird sizes] Let's see... finch, wren, scrub bird, lockeet, freckled duck, culah, kukaberra, parrot, cockatoo, alba... alba...?!?! It's a jumbo!! [into radio] Negative one three, you'll have to turn back, our runway isn't long enough for a bird your size.

Wilbur:
Not long enough?!? Look pal, I can land this thing on a dime!

Bernard:
[heard over radio] Uh... Wilbur, if, if the runway isn't long enough...

Wilbur:
Listen you can't let these radar jockeys push you around. Just leave it to me alright?

Jake:
[into radio] I say again mate, our runway is too short.

When a Govt announces a open sky policy it is usually for the country. After all the Civil Aviation Ministry is not just for one airline for the aviation industry.

Unfortunately, the idiots in Rajeev Bhavan, led by Mr.Prafull Patel havent learnt that basic truth yet. Hence Civil Aviation policy remains finding out ways to preserve the shit that is Air India. It is this mentality that has turned Air India into a millstone around Indias neck. Air India is holding back the growth in the entire aviation sector.

It is high time that Mr.Prafull Patel understood that he is the Minister for Civil Aviation and not the Minister for Air India. He should be working towards the development of Aviation and not the protection of Air Indias monopoly.

You are absolutely right. Rwy 27 at HYD has a maximum length of 2996m which may cause the A340-300 which LH is planning on the route to have weight penalties. LH on its part has already done its groundwork and even identified the person to head the station.

By the way EK is planning something like 150 extra sections and innumerable upgrades during the open sky. A pity if they repeat what they did last year. Put B773s into DEL and then cut DEL-DXB OW fares to INR 5500 to fill in the those planes. Nuts

Al Jazeera - the new Kuwait based airline is also seriously exploring the possibility of India operations shortly and have initiated first steps with the Ministry and DGCA.
