Zurich Airport Festival This Weekend

Tue Sep 07, 2004 7:47 pm

Anyone going?

It marks the end of the Building works for the New Terminal and Extension.

Looks great - the public get Airside for free (wow!), plenty of displays, exhibitions and of course there's Status Quo and DJ Tatana playing concerts live in the former Swissair Hangar.

Yes, I couldn't believe it either, but it's true!

What more do you want!

I swear A.net was down and the lack of posts for 11 hours shows it.
I would go to the ZRH thing, I loved ZRH when I was there. Free airside would be awsome, tell me all about it.

Free airside would be awesome, tell me all about it

Be careful, it's not the entire apron accessible to the public, it's only the exibition zone where some of the aircraft will be parked. The interesting stuff on display will be parked quite close to each other so don't expect too much...!

It's all free of charge including the gigs of Status Quo etc. (beer is charged though...  Smile/happy/getting dizzy)

I'll be coming in to ZRH on the 11th on AA 64, but I don't think I'll make it because I'll be too jet-lagged. Good timing, though! Wish I could make it!

As soon as you see the Super Connie, DC-3, Ju-52, South African A340-300, Tu-204, Tu-334, DC-6, Electra, B-25 and many more, you'll forget about the jetlag instantly...  Nuts

Alberto, there will be thousands of visitors coming by car so please expect parking lots quite far away from the airport. There will be shuttle busses provided but expect some delay until you reach the scene!

Enjoy the open day!

Its increadabel. There will also be the strongest man of austria there, who will pull a Helvetic F100.

question to Flyswiss: are those Tupolevs going to be there all three days , or just on Friday?

It's remarkable: they are now constructing a full Fairground with Big Wheel and Dodgem Cars on the apron!!

I think they're expecting the whole of Switzerland to attend.

I can't see the BAA doing this when T5 is rolled-out!

Thanks for that increadabel link, Unique. Im looking forward in getting to see the DC3 and the JU52 aswell next to the Connie.
The site tells you, when the planes will take off, for ex DC-3 of Swissair will take off at 5 pm on Sunday. Can you also see somewhere on which runway it will be? I mean it will eather take off on runway 16 or 28. Id like to know to take pictures.

I didn`t want to start a new thread. I saw the news on a Swiss tv channel yesterday. I looked closer and found out that the terminals got their old names. Is that true? Instead of terminal 1, 2 and 3 i could read A, B and E.

The terminals are called 1,2
The Check in areas 1,2 (in terminals 1,2) and 3 (at the Railway station)
The Gates are called Axx, Bxx and Exx
You can board ALL gates from ALL terminals. This is one of the main purposes of the now opening airside center. (and of course all the shops  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I mean it will either take off on runway 16 or 28

DeltaWings, runway 16 is very unlikely so concentrate on runway 28. If the wind is from the East with more than approx. 10 Knots, however, you can expect runway 10...

The terminals are called 1,2

Officially, there are no more terminals, only Pier A, Pier B (closed) and Pier E. The check-in areas are called 1, 2 and 3, the arrival areas are 1 and 2.

Alberto, wise choice!

Ju52 HB-HOY as well as DC-3 HB-ISC plus some smaller stuff will make several sightseeing flights so you'll have a good chance to see it!

Enjoy the day and don't miss the aircraft exhibition - Tu-334, Tu-204, SAA A340 and the Super Connie can be visited inside!

Was there today (couldn't miss Patrouille Suisse, after I already missed Air04....).

Quite nice, I was a bit dissappointed, because i didn't see teh Swiss A340 (only SAT & SUN). However HB-IWA/IWQ are on Display, really worth having a last look at 'our' first 11er, still in SR c/s...

The Airside Center is really nice. Unfortunately the Swiss Lounge isn't open to the public (neither visitors nor Passengers), would have liked to see the long bar  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Anyway, really nice Party, reminds me a bit of the Flughafenfest at the 50th anniversary in 1998... (Remember the A319/320/321/Avro Formation of Swissair...)

If you can, go there, have fun. It's worth it. I'll probably go again either tomorrow or sunday...

Greetings,

Patrick

I was there today (saturday) with family. It was a great day. We had a short visit in the Super Connie, which was great!! Aviation wise, the highlight was probably the start of an AN124. Anybody knows, why it was there? I can't imagine, only for the festival ....

All in all, a unforgettable day. In 20 or 30 years I can say "I was there"  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Gerardo: I was there too! But I didn't see you, where did you hide?  Big grin

The AN124 was in Zurich to pick some stuff from Unaxis for a Korean customer. Apparently, they transported parts for a machine to produce (computer-) displays.

I visited the airport on Friday and today. It was really great. Despite the crowd I was able to take some nice pictures of the presented aircraft as well of the usual traffic.
Thanks to Unique and all the involved companies and people.
BTW: It was nice that there were thousands of people, it was a good weekend for the airport with a lot of good public relation. People I have talked to were excited in what the airport did for them!!

Gerado - let us know when you've got the photos on a.net!

Was a good weekend, everything perfect apart from the Sunday morning rain.

Nice one Unique - excellent work and what aviation should really be about: it was the little things for non-aviation folk that I appreciated as well: being able to walk up and touch the aircraft. Mrs Standby was alarmed because she could stand at the back of the TU204 engine and see right through the fan blades at the front. "Is that normal?" she asked!

Kids area was good and Status Quo? Well, as Francis Rossi said "it's a very strange venue here tonight!"

Cheers!

First reports give a total of 270000 visitors! An excellent proof that the airport is not that terrible...!

Swissgabe, I'm not sure which A320 you mean. There are only two all white A320's present at ZRH, EI-CZV and CZW.

N38WF is reportedly to be converted to a freighter and sold to South Winds Cargo. That's at least what I've heard...

Unique, right, I didn't see the plane near the heliport, it was where the TG M11 was parked today. Near the maintenance area. Must have been EI-CZW.

But then EI-CZV was the plane I already saw in EI colors?

Michael, you should have looked in the "Chilbi" or the Children's Paradise ... I was ther with my little daughter  Smile/happy/getting dizzy Smile/happy/getting dizzy

It was indeed a wonderful PR weekend for the airport and the airport partners. Not even the few anti-airport people outside the doors could do anything against this wonderful weekend.

There was just one sentimental feeling for my wife and me. We saw HB-IWA, which left the LX fleet already, in the hangar. HB-IWA brought us from LAX to ZRH in Feb 2000 after a nice holiday in Maui. Sweet memories ..... byebye HB-IWA.
