Airplane's Toilet Ice Crashes Garden Party
Mon Sep 6, 9:50 PM ET

GRAZ, Austria - It was an inelegant intruder on a sunny afternoon: a chunk of ice from a jetliner toilet that broke free and slammed into an Austrian family's garden.

No one was injured when the ice tumbled from the sky Sunday afternoon in Graz, about 120 miles south of Vienna, authorities said. The fragment bore deep into the soil in the garden, where the unidentified family was enjoying a lazy summer afternoon.

Police said the 6-inch ice ball almost certainly came from an airliner toilet, judging from its blue color and its odor. They did not elaborate.

Thank goodness no one was hurt! Could you imagine having to be the one to type in "Airplane Toilet Ice" as the cause of death on a Death Certificate?! Imagine having to explain that one to mourning family and friends.

I've heard of very sparse reports of lav ice falling from aircraft, but does this kind of thing happen often?

Thought I'd post this for a chuckle or discussion!

Cheers,

Whatever happened to that guy that tried to sue AA for causing damage to his boat? He lost the case, but wasn't he preparing to sue some other airline?  Confused

I remember a woman in the news once who found some "blue ice" and thought it was a meteor so she put it in her freezer to save it for the news! Duh. Boeing put out a training viedo about blue ice some years back after American lost an angine due to a chronic leak. (The freezing and expansion of the water that ran back along the fuselage fatigued the metal on the #3 engine mount http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/GenPDF.asp?id=LAX85IA206&rpt=fi) Apparently it happens too often considering that 'no leak is the only acceptable one'. One rather sizable chunk flattened a cars roof on the tape. It usually happens under the major arrival routes as frozen leaks start to melt and break free as the plane descends. The video mentioned more than a dozen reports of it in Long Island, NY in one year....yucko.

I can't recall if it was a fake or if it was real. It was an older picture, black and white. It was of a family room's roof crashed in b/c of an ice block, later idenifyed as a "poop block", in this family's house. Funny to see. Now I know there is a special hose that is hooked up to the a/c that discards the waste, can this come undone in flight?

I saw the song CEO guy doing the ground crew job and he took the business out. Not a fun job. Talk about taking a customer's $hit.

Thanks again.

very rare but very interesting story indeed. this has happened several times in the past - every situation in different ways. I find it hard for me to ignore "Airplane Toilet Ice" stories, lol... Yes 420!

Actaully, there is one of these stories in the press about once a year at least. And strangely, always Boeing aircraft, it would seem....hmmmm.... just could be an indication that those planes really do know what they're made of/full of!?  Wink/being sarcastic

"Now I know there is a special hose that is hooked up to the a/c that discards the waste, can this come undone in flight? "
Yes, it's hooked up while on the ground. The dump hose is attatched to the lav truck and is not part of the airplane so it cannot come undone in flight. The cap to the drain valve is subject to leaks and that is where the problem occurs.

Also, the culprit aircraft is rarely identified, so how can one be sure it was a Boeing???? In my day I have dumped Airbus, Boeing, MD & Lockheed and they can all leak if the plug seal from the waste tank to the drain line is bad and there is no secondary stopper at the drain valve opening (or it leaks too).

No need to. I'm sure the ice ball spoke for itself.

LOL...Is it possible? Yes, when there is a leak in the lavatory system. Obviously, blue ice is by no means an intentional dumping of lav waste. 'Technically', the tolerance for leaks is zero. 'Legally' most airline maintenance proceedures specify that if a dump chute is found to be leaking (usually evidenced by streaks of blue colorant along the fuselage) it must be fixed or the toilet drained and taken out of service until it can be repaired.

What about dumping it intentionally? Is it possible by pressing a button? Guess not right?

Didn't the 727 have a long line of engine losses through this, the Ice would come flying off the front lav hatch and take out the starboard engine?

Any aircraft (with a toilet) can leak 'the blue stuff' it is not just a problem with plagues Boeing (Although they have been around longer so there would be more instances of it).

I remember several years ago a "Blue Bomber" crashed through the roof of a greenhouse on the north shore here in Massachusetts. Did major damage if I recall. Tough way to water the plants.

Perhaps this could start the ultimate A vs. B war - which generates the bigger poop balls?

I mean this is a really funny story, but only until you think of the possible consequences when such "blessing" from the sky hits you, your kid or someone elderly in the head.
