Coach On 747 Upper Deck

Wed Sep 08, 2004 9:24 am

Anyone out there know which airlines have coach seating on the upper decks of their 747s?

Just curious.

If this has been asked before, excuse me, and please give me a link to the appropriate thread, as my search function isn't working for some reason.

Cheers,

TWA, for a short time, had a coach section in the upper deck of its 747SP fleet.

Well, this post covers more older airlines: http://www.airliners.net/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/1239764, and even then, some information is incorrect, such as VS having Economy seating.

Does AC still have economy on the upper deck of their 744's? Or have they changed that now?

Cheers,

Jeff

BA used to have it on their 747s to the caribbean. But with the change to 777s that's no longer the case.

SR used to have economy on the upper deck on their 747-300s back in the 80s. I don't know if when they updated the a/c if they changed that but I remember as a kid riding up there.

I also remember flying Swissair 747-300s with 69 coach seats in the upper deck. I don't know if that changed in later years.

Y-class in a short upper-deck 747 must have been like sitting in a cage.
Yuck!

JL's & NH's 744Ds have 3-3 economy seating in the upper deck. There are even two or three seat at the top of the staircase. Once I sat in one of those seats. There is a closet right in front and the aforementioned stair leading down. Good news is lots of leg room!

Some of JL's 743s on int'l high-density configs have economy in upper deck too. Don't know exact aircraft numbers but at least JA8186 & JA8187 because they are Jalways aircraft.

Ansett Australia used to have economy class on the upper deck (Both B743 and B744). I think Ansett Australia was the first airlines to have new PTVs for economy class on the B744 upper deck. Sadly, Ansett Australia has gone loong time ago!!

QF did...I rode on a 742 Combi on 12/18/87, LAX-HNL upstairs...first time ever flying in the upper deck. It was pretty spacious and comfortable, I thought...nice not having hordes of people all around you like on the main deck.

Aircraft is now retired, it was the "City of Swan Hill".

So for airlines that do use the upper deck for economy seating, are upper tier elites usually given priority to these seats?

Starlionblue,

The Upper Deck of Corsair's B743 is devided into two classes : "Grand Large" at the front (25 seats) and "Economy" at the rear. The main deck is all "Y" sardines class.

Air France has 60 Y seats at the upper of its 4 B743 serving PTP & FDF.
The 4 remaining B742 have 27 "Y" seats at the Upper Deck also.

Q: You can clearly see the overhead projector/beamer for the video right in the MIDDLE of the aisle! Where is the screen?? It can't be hanging in the aisle (no one will get to the lav.), can it??

@FLYSSC: so how many seats in total are in the upper deck of Corsair??

a few years back (11 to be precise) I took a QF 747SP from SYD to BNE and was in the upper deck - that was economy.

It was considered the best econ seating on that particular plane - a friend who was a senior manager at QF moved me to sit there from bog standard seats downstairs. He said they were the best econ seats, though I was more excited about being on a SP than the seats!

It's probably hanging behind the cockpit door.

All Nippon Airways has economy class seats in the upper deck of its 747-481Ds, while normal 747-481s have normal configuration with business class both upstairs and in the nose section.

It's probably hanging behind the cockpit door.

The screen hangs down from just before the entrance to the walkway leading to the toilets and cockpit. And yes, passengers would have to duck beneath the screens to access the toilets.

SAA does indeed have Y class on the upper deck (which I am booked on in October Big grin). The Y class SAA seating on the upper deck actually offers two inches extra legroom (33" as opposed to 31" on the main deck) and it is no more expensive then any other part of economy.

SAA's upper deck economy are the best Y seats in the airline, extra pitch, small cabin and good service, the aisle seats are the best of all!

Air Atlanta does on TF-ARG, and the two on loan to Travel City do. Altho they are sold as a premium ecoomy product, but are far from premium economy seats.

Im glad to hear others remember the SR upper deck- Citation even knows the amount of seats that were up there- lol. Awesome. I remember they were that ugly 80s brown. I do remember the agents my mom was friends with here in NYJFK saying how it was the best spot on the a/c b/c it was so quiet and that they didnt understand why they didnt have First class up there.

SAA no longer operates 743's.

Air Pacific have Y class on the upper deck of their 744's!

QF did I believe on their 742's and 74L's atleast in the latter years of their lives, sadly these are long gone.
