HKG And China Strike New Air Pact!

Wed Sep 08, 2004 7:46 pm

The much anticipated air service agreement between mainland China and Hong Kong has finally concluded: Chinese carriers will be given fifth rights to operate out of Hong Kong whereas CX is cleared to fly to Shanghai and Xiamen.

Shanghai will only be cleared for CX passenger service in a distant 2 years from now. No detailed news regarding the Beijing flights. I guess Cathay wants to reinforce their current schedule to Beijing as soon as possible.

Good news to CX although the new flights could only start in Oct 2006. Wait to see how KA react in coming 2 years.

This is great news.

Although, it kinda sucks that CX won't see PVG nor XMN until October 2006.

Maybe, I'll go to China on CX for my birthday when they begin the new service.

It's a good start but obviously the deal still falls short of an "open sky" many commentators have previously anticipated.

Besides CX's (re-)entry to PVG and XMN, the most exciting aspect of the agreement is that it entails the set up of a 4th passenger carrier in Hong Kong, flying predominately Chinese routes.

The deal is absolutely ludicrous. The communist machinery is so keen on breeding their own airline champions, they don't stop at nothing to keep CX from realizing their full China potential. The sale to Beijing of Dragonair was part of the Hong Kong handover and ordained by Downing street. In a free market, CX would buy China Eastern, resume control over Dragonair, and be done with it. I have some friends at CX management and the frustration with Beijing is mounting. All that misdirected emerging nationalism. They should concentrate on solving their environmental and social problems and leave the markets alone.

This is China mate, it is all about connection, connection, connection. Why would they let someone else tap into your market when: -

A/ The chairman holds certain position in the party.
B/ The voice of that chairman gets though to the management in the party (old boys club).
C/ They think central government already give enough to HK anyway.
D/ HK population wants an open sky with everybody else, not realizing the huge impact on yield/crowding out etc. Read an article from an assistant prof from HK Poly University and I can't stop laughing for five minutes! Simple, EVERYBODY (excludes CXFlyboy maybe) thinks CX is a MONOPLY in HK, but not knowing what impact would bring when a free for all market open up.
E/ CX would outdone MU anyway.

CZ do have certain 5th freedom right out of HK anyway, could KA and CX do that from Guangzhou?

Its politics

SADLY, there is no such thing called a real FREE MARKET, it neither exists in Hong Kong nor anywhere else in this world.

Best Regards.

yeah, blame on the communist China for CX's own greedy needs. If free market only means CX can do whatever she wants and WHEN she pleases, sorry the game is not played like this and its never "fair". However those were the terms both parties agreed on, "fairness" was out of the question. CX does have a choice not to agree on the terms she does not like. But she did so blame her for doing so.
