Cubana IL-18 Currently Airborne?!?!?

Thu Sep 09, 2004 10:38 am

Hey guys,

I was just browsing through some flights in my AirNav Flight Tracker when I stumbled across the strangest thing. Cubana Flight 1546 from YQX to HAV is being operated by an IL-18. First of all, I can't see why a Cubana flight would have a routing of YQX-HAV unless is was on an Int'l flight and had to stop at Gander for a fuel stop. I know that such flights used to be operated on SVO-YQX-HAV routes, but the IL-62s were used on this route.

I can not see why or even how they can be using an IL-18. According to the latest version of JP, Cubana doesn't have any more IL-18s left in their fleet. The only IL-18s in Cuba are operated by Aerocaribbean and they sure wouldn't have any business up in Gander. I double checked on Flytecomm and it gave me the same results - euipment is an IL-18. The only explanation I can come up with is that there was a system error and the flight is indeed being operated by an IL-62. Any and all info would be very much appreciated!! Smile

Aerocaribbean has recently bought 2 Il-18s from former soviet owners, it is probably one of these on a ferry flight. Also their other Il-18s have known to make an occasional hop to Europe (via Gander) for overhaul.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

Some pics here on a.net also indicate that the cuban russian planes are oocaisonaly send to Russia for heavy mx, includign smaller types like An-24. But in this case I do think too, that it is a ferry flight.

yes that's what I thought also, Aerocaribbean IL18 either on delivery or back from maintenance. What surprises me is that this flight is listed at all by flytecomm, probably because somehow it's flying under Cubana, which it does list. It doesn't list Aerocaribbean which really is nothing more than a branch of Cubana anyways.

What destinations in Europe and what kind of cargo?

How long ago was this? I imagine the flights must have stopped at Gander.

Yes they were via YQX. They flew adhoc charters to destinations such as
MAD / PRG / SXF / SVO. Cargo for the most part was cigars. I have been
on many of these while at YQX in the early 90,s .

If it was 1546, it would have been the Aerocaribbean Il-18, which was recently seen at SVO, on ferry flight to Cuba. (note the registration is the same as the flight number)
