Two KLM Diversions Due To Medical Problems

Thu Sep 09, 2004 5:17 pm

Two different passengers with heart complaints were taken care of by the capable hands of KLM crew members. They most probably have to thank their lives to the KLM crew due to the fast action that was taken.

The captain on a KL flight from IAH to AMS, decided to turn back when one of the Flight Attendants had some serious heart complaints.
The flight from YVR to AMS made an emergency stop in Yellowknife in Northern Canada, after a 67 year old woman went into cardiac arrest.

Fortunately both flight had doctors on board and Flight Attendants with nursery skills for the initial care. They were supported by a KLM doctor in AMS by radio.

The KLM Flight Attendant is momentarily in a Houston hospital, where her company is being kept by a fellow Flight Attendant.
CPR has successfully been performed on the 67 year old woman and she is staying in a Canadian hospital.

In both cases the flights only had a few hours delay. The passengers applauded the entire crew for the way they handled the situations.

wow, there seems to be a lot of cases like that afoot. A friend at our travel agency told me that just a few days ago an Austrian Airlines Airbus had to divert to Gander en route from YYZ to VIE due to a passenger developing a serious heart condition and apparently the passenger died while still being on board...... really tragic

Many people only see negative sides of crew members. Here we have a great proof that they are not only "waiters" and "waitresses" as many people think they are.

Thank you Flight attendants for the great job you do up there.

So KLM has a doctor that provides on-line medical command...I thought that companies are hired to do this for the airlines. If airlines have in-house on-line medical command solutions, who are they and are they hiring???

I don't know if the doctor is directly employed with the airline. Here in Aruba the "KLM doctor" is a normal house doctor who KLM selected to consult every once in a while when certain situations arise. He is paid a fee per month to be on call for KLM and gets to fee Business Class tickets a year as a bonus.

That would explain why the 744 was late departing the other day out of IAH, thought it was a bit strange to see it going out around 6:30pm or so...
