UA And Their New Livery

Thu Sep 09, 2004 6:57 pm

All quiet on the western front.
Is there no 777, 767 or even 747 in UAs vast fleet that needed a D-check and subsequent paint-strip in the last 6 months?
Unbelievable to me.
Or has the new paintscheme been reviewed so badly that the airline thinks about dropping it?

I don't think UA is going to drop their new scheme. Maybe they just don't have the money to repaint their fleet big time at this point. I know it's a little awkward but that's the only explanation that seems reasonable.
I was in ORD last month and saw several RJs that already had the new colors, though.

I know they are only reopainting aircraft when they need to, but still it seems odd that none of the 40 or so 744s, none of the 767s (even a higher number) and no 777 was due for it in the past 6 months! We are talking about roughly 150 aircraft here, not a dozen!

Patience is a virtue, my friend. United is painting according to their schedule and is fully committed to the new attractive paint scheme.

I hope you aren't losing sleep worrying about this.  Smile

If it makes you feel any better, plenty of CRJs and ERJs have been painted recently.

The first 744 should be painted in November. Remember, most of UA's 777s are less than 6 yrs old, and the older ones may have had D-checks before the new livery was introduced. Same goes for the 767s, 757s, 747s. The 747s in fact are mostly newer than the triple sevens (UA ordered more 744s when they bought the 777s, 30 I think).

I seriously doubt the new livery has been that poorly received. I think it's a vast improvement over the drab Wolff scheme, and it looks even better first-hand than in photos (I've seen it on a 737-300).
I'm not dumb. I just have a command of thoroughly useless information.

There are more United Express aircraft in the new colors because they are new to the fleet. Chautauqua and Shuttle America just joined the United Express family, so their aircraft were repainted right into the new color scheme. Also, some express carriers are receiving brand new aircraft off of the line, so they are being painted with the new colors right away. These aircraft never wore the old blue/gray scheme.

A 777 will be painted in the Star Alliance livery end of October.

A 747 will be painted in the new livery in November.

All the 757s going into "PS" mode (the premium transcon SFO/LAX-JFK) will receive the new livery when their cabins are switched over.

Hope this helps.

Saw an RJ in the new livery the other day and it looks nice. Now if they could just start making money...

Speaking about the new livery, of course.

Look at all the newly painted aircraft in that picture! Granted, the introduction of new aircraft to the Express fleet is largely responsible for this view at IAD. However, I have to admit that I've seen a newly-painted UA aircraft pretty much every time I've flown this summer. They have been mostly 737s and (Skywest) CRJs, but they are out there.

United has a large fleet. They aren't painting new planes left and right like Delta, but instead taking a slower and more pragmatic approach, like Northwest.

Slightly OT...but on the topic of liveries....

Pulling into ATL last night on US I swear I saw a Star Alliance painted RJ, is this a UAX carrier or US Express...can't seem to find it in the DB

The new livery is a bit too simple. Hope they will come up with something better when they become richer....

AFAIK there is ONE 777 in the n/c. Saw it flying out of Dulles at the beginning of July.

UA had to worry about TED, getting the A320's redone. They chose the 733's I believe that were in the "shuttle" livery because they were mostly white anyway. I have seen only one 757 in the new livery, once in SFO, and once in ORD. I know of one 777 in the new scheme, saw it @ VCV. I fly UA a lot (75k miles) and have not been on any newly painted craft yet!!

ORD2PHL, I think US Airways Express has a CR7 in Star colors, don't remember where I saw it, but I'm pretty sure they have one.

This guy must work for the media. Its amazing how leaving certain facts out of a statement can spin an issue into a story...

What about the 43 TED planes that have been painted?

I have noticed that way more United Express birds are in the new colours than the mainline birds. Quite frankly, I think it's the best colour scheme I've ever seen on a CR7. My congrats to United.

...a couple of modifications I would like to see on the paintscheme:

#1/ change the font from black to blue

#2/ instead of the triple blue stripes (which look too choppy), use a fade technique like on the tail.

Although the new colors look "cleaner", the variation on the already done BA/ Canadi>n (first scheme)/Varig...etc etc etc doesn't show much originality...in fact only the tail is really eye-popping. In that vain, I will ONLY say cudos on the tail....

To make my point...look at this link: (a casual proposal for Allegiant Air)

...and what they actually did to their aircraft:

a little more color can improve a good idea.

The 777 in new colours is N775UA, there are many pics in the database. I saw her in Frankfurt taking off last Monday.

I like this new colour scheme, looks beautiful on the real planes.

Just to clear it up:

733s: 8 (estimate)
752s: 3
772s: 1

Plus a lot of RJs and some Saabs (and one Dash 8). And then of course, Ted.

Nothing wrong with the Allegiant livery really. That fantasy livery is a beauty except for little detail that makes a big difference -the upwards curve near the nose. That is ugly, just like Air Tran's and a few other new european liveries that did it to their aircraft.

Back on topic, about the United livery:

Na, you're a designer, do you like UA's new livery? I didnt like the gray of the old but this one is not my cup of tea either. What would you do to improve it, in case you dont like it too much as it is.

I would have preferred if they had taken the 3 lines of lighter to darker blue and made it into thick stripes. So i'd be 3 shades of blue on the underside, instead of just one shade everywhere. Too many airlines have that same blue underside already. Still undecided if I like that tail also.

(my 1st a.net post!)

I think that anything would have been an improvement over the previous UA livery. I always thought that the gray and navy blue made the airline seem cold and stoic. At least the new livery lightens it up, even if its simpler and common looking.

I love the tail (even the Ted tail too). I'm not so sure about the three bands of blue, though. To me, it looks awkward.

I'm a big fan of the new scheme. Something different (if only until the rest of the fleet is painted) over the Denver skies.
