Aeropuerto A Nogales, Sonora

Fri Sep 10, 2004 4:05 am

I noticed that Nogales, Sonora has a single runway (5900 ft) airport. It doesn't appear to have commercial air service of any kind there. Since Nogales is home to over 300,000 people and growing, are there any plans to add infrastucture to accommodate commercial airline service? That would eliminate the need for many of those residents to drive 150 miles south to HMO or 70 miles north across the border to TUS. All input is welcome!

That area really has exploded in population. I thought that Tucson was further than 70 miles. I suppose with no easy way to settle the border issue each side would have to have it's own service unless you could clear US customs at the airport then be bused to Arizona.
Keep on truckin'...

Jmc1975,

I agree with you.

Nogales is one of Mexico largest cities WITHOUT schedule air services, only behing Cuernavaca and Pachuca.

Once, I used phone traffic to compare main trunks out of Nogales to other trunks with actual air links. It came to no surprise than Nogales-HMO traffic was much larger than HMO-CEN (which is even closer).

I offered this data to Aerolitoral planning staff and they were interested in serving Nogales from its hub in HMO, but I think facilities were not useful.

Nogales was previously served by Aeronaves de Mexico. I have a copy of their 1958 schedule with services to Mexico City stopping in at least 5 or 6 cities.
