A380 At SXM

Fri Sep 10, 2004 11:13 am

What is the possibility of the A380 taking a turn for SXM. I'd love to see a shot of an A380 flying right over the beach. Any thought or expertise.

A380 At Sxm

don't think its gonna happen... i believe the 747-400 can not even take off with full load correct? so i don't think the a380 is going to unless they add a docked runway on one side

No way. The jetblast would be too heavy, the plane could not turn at the small turning plate in the end and I doubt the teakeoff and climb performance are good enough to evoid the mountains.
Also, much more important, I guess with mostly props, 57s from the USA and some heavies from Europe, the yield might not be there.

Nudelhirsch: where do you have the technical information to say that?
I think A380 operations will not be too different from the B747-400...

Except that the outboard engines are 25' farther out from the centerline. That's a LOT at a tight little airport like SXM.

Would it be economical? AF are the only ones operating into SXM that are current future operators of the A380 and the size difference between the 340 and 380 is a little bit different.

Takeoff and landing performance per se is fine, but lateral clearance and turning are problems.

I'm sure the A380 can take off just fine from SXM, but the on ground layout isn't really A380 friendly.

Was there last week, amazing place... seems as though the reclamation for the new terminals is going ahead at a decent pace.

It's not that the A380 can't be accommodated. Remember this airplane still fits into the 80 x 80 meter box that is the industry standard. That was a design parameter.

But as for seeing it in SXM that is not likely. What airline that flies there, would purchase an A380 and put it on that route? I can't think of one.

St. Maartin to/from anywhere is not a high density route.

It actually became the industry standard when the 380 was being designed, and as a result of that design process. Airbus had to go to the operators and airports and ask how big they could make the darned thing. I bet they wanted to make it bigger  Big grin

So most airports are not really A380 certified in terms of the box, but their 747 gates often have a bit of space on either side and the runways are wider than necessary.

no chance of seeing the A380 at SXM, just look at the customers and none of them even fly to SXM!

and the 747 has to operate with reduced load due to the shortened runway length.

If they ever have a major gathering or event on St Maartin then maybe youll see a charter there but you will never see commercial service. However, SXM could be a good destination for the 7E7.
