World's Busiest Airport With No 747 Service

Fri Sep 10, 2004 12:36 pm

I was checking the OAG database and found out that ATL only has 5x week 747 service to Korea and DFW, the world's 5th busiest has no regularly scheduled passenger 747 service, only one daily four-motor A340 "heavy" service. I find this hard to believe. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

I find this hard to believe.

Why? The airports are both huge mega-hubs for two of the world's largest airlines. They take most of the traffic, and neither operate four-engine aircraft. And Dallas and Atlanta, while major US business centres, aren't huge on international traffic along the likes of New York City, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, etc.,

That makes good sense but you would think that DL and AA being alliance partners with European airlines, would see more large a/c at their hubs.

This topic was discussed not to long ago. But DFW just has China Airlines Cargo with 747. There may be another 747 but i'm not sure.

Both DFW & ATL should have 74F service particularly from Asian airlines. Though not pax service the topic says 747.
During a visit to ATL last year, I saw JL, KE, BR, CI, & MP 74F.

I don't think DEN has any scheduled passenger 747 service at this time, although BA, LH and UA will send in one sporadically.

DFW hasn't had 747 pax service since KE downgraded their 3x weekly flight to a 772, we used to have 744 JAL service pre-9/11, Lufthansa was here with a 742 in the 80's and Thai used to be here with a 742 or something.

But now we've just got cargo 747s. I think these are all that operate 747s:

LH Cargo
Korean Cargo
Eva Cargo
Singapore Cargo
China Airlines Cargo
Atlas Air
UPS (every once in a while they'll toss in a 741/2 to the mix)
Evergreen (not sure if this one still comes around)
Southern Air (I saw this plane last Sunday spotting and I don't know anything about this airline)

Not bad but we all want 747 pax service at DFW. I just don't think there's the demand, though.

"hasn't had 747 pax service since KE downgraded their 3x weekly flight to a 772..."

I'd personally take the 777 over the 747, so it is a little ironic to accept it as a downgrade. But if you look at it as a # of seats on the flight, or the more cool commanding look a 747 gives at the airport I guess it is a downgrade.

What about Memphis? Since it's FedEx's main hub that's got to be high up on the list of busiest airport.

DFW may be the AA hub, but that doesn't justify it 747 passenger service. There isn't the large international demand like at JFK, LAX, ORD etc, which serve larger US cities. So, for carriers like BA, it makes more sense economically to operate a 777 on the route.

Actually JAL used the 744 then switched it to the MD-11 before they pulled out of DFW. I know that for a fact as I had spotted both many times.

The Southern Air 747 comes from ANC.

We do get the occassional Evergreen 747 and Cargolux 744F.

That may be true, but they aren't scheduled, they are merely equipment subs.

B741,

There used to be a South African 744 that did direct flights to Johannesburg not to long ago. Not sure if they still do.

Cheers....

FRAspotter:

The 747-400 service from ATL to CPT has been replaced with Airbus A340-600. I believe that it is no longer nonstop from ATL to CPT, I think that there is a refueling stop in Cabo Verde, not really sure, correct me if I am wrong.

The SAA sched is quite confusing. I believe that the route goes JNB-SAL-ATL-CPT-JNB. I could be wrong but last I checked that's what it was.

Unlike GSO?

GSO now sees Tradewinds 747s plus 747s in Timco alot.
