Copa Keeps Growing

Fri Sep 10, 2004 6:38 pm

Panama based Copa airlines has announced the acquisition of 4 additional new generation Boeing 737s.
It has also announced an increase in flights to Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo. This will be in two phases, starting in January 2005 with 3 extra weekly flights to Buenos Aires, and 4 to Sao Paulo. By June 2005 these 2 cities will be served by 2 daily non-stop flights from Panama.

Copa is definitely consolidating itself in South America, making good use of its strategic hub location.

Indeed, COPA ordered two additional 737-700s for 2006 and leased one 737-700, and one -800 from 2005.

Nice business model. Their in-cabin service is better than most carriers operating Central/South America for what you pay. I flew MIA-PTY-BAQ, with an intermediate stop in CTG; on the PTY-CTG leg they offer a sandwich, bag of chips and soda for a 50 minute flight. Nice clean airplanes (the NGs).

The only drawback I found is the layover in PTY.

Apart from that, only nice things to say about COPA.

Great news for Copa, and Panama at that. With the addition of these new services to EZE and GRU, they are now closer and closer to their objective of serving twice daily most of their destinations.

I, as well, only hear nice things about COPA. Almost all connections are timed and planned pretty well, in a way that the passenger gets off the plane and hops into the other one right away. Only a few flights like PTY-LAX and PTY-JFK that depart in the evening are a headache for connecting pasengers inbound from South Ameruica that arrive to PTY in the morning.

Good job Copa !

It seems like COPA is a really good airline. I have spoken to a couple of Panamanians that I go to law school with, and they are really happy with what it has become. They also offer really good fares from LAX-South America. I am guessing they would fly a 757 PTY-MIA-MAD, especially if they have 5th freedoms on the MIA-MAD route

I don't think a 757 could do the 4,410 mile journey from MIA to MAD ...

Well i nfact Copa has been considating has a great airline in terms of fleet and service, they operate from/to almost all LA to Panama and an easy conection with Continental network, is by far the most successfull Latin airline just behind LAN, great news and good for them that they are growing...

The new 738 will also be used in some routes for which the 737-700 is not enough in peak season, and that couldn't be upgraded because the lack of 738s.

About the 757.. I don't think Copa will get one, remember, one of the keys of Copa's success is fleet commonality, adding a 757 wouldn't be wise, specially adding a single 757 for a single route, which btw is pretty unlikely. (Although the 752 has proved well TransAtlantic travel wise for CO from EWR to England and OSL, but who knows from MIA until MAD, I guess the distance is bigger, although I'm not sure).

The only trans-Atlantic destination that a 757 can get to from MIA are Iceland, the Azores, and the Cape Verde Islands, and none are fully across the Atlantic.

That answers my question... no way MIA - MAD on a 757 then.
Respecfully, I think the 757 for CM thing is pure gossip.

I remember CM flying a few years ago to SJU. I think they stop around 2000.

Why did they?

Yeah Grupo Taca discontinued its flights to San Juan (I believe it was around 2000 or 2001- not sure)- they ocasionally operate charters into SJU. Copa still has 10 weekly flights btw SJU and PTY with the 737-700's.
