Malta Airport

Sat Sep 11, 2004 3:54 am

I'm really scared of flying and was going to go to Madeira but have read that it can be a bit dicey going in and out of there because of the hills, wind etc etc so am now planning on going to Malta, is this a more "normal" airport to fly into and out of? In other words will it be less scary!! ;o)

i've been flying for 5 years, relatively flat lands of florida, im in turkey now, but what i can say is that it depends more on the flight crew and airline than the actual appraoch into an airport. Malta seems to be a fine appraoch with no major mountains of obstructions, i highly doubt there is any problem getting into this airport. I wouldn't advise flying into certain Austrian cities for a while though  Smile

have a good trip

Luqa Airport at Malta is flat and easy. No mountains, 2 runways. Picture taken in late August 2004 short after take off when I visited Malta for my Summer holiday. In the background you see Malta's capital Valetta and it's natural harbour.

I can not share with DENS Opinion at all regarding the beauty of the island, but yes its an easy approach in and out with nice views on the island.

When I used to fly there, Malta was always an "easy day out". No major terrain issues, two nice long runways, generally very good weather.

Easy money.  Big grin

I disagree with Dens. Malta doesn't offer a lot.

Rick767, fly to Corfu (Greece) and take the boat to Paxos. In the village Loggos or capital Gaios (both at Paxos) you will find paradise!

Really dont understand what you mean by this ? Is it regarding the "mountains"?? In case this is meant - well - just INN has a couple of "higher hills" around  Big grin - but only to the left and right side - both ends of the runway have some space left to the next mountains ...

I know this is off topic, but I feel compelled to reply.

Malta, even though it's a tiny country, has more than it's 'tiny' fair share to offer.

May I suggest that one visits the Lonely Planet website and/or make some research before posting remarks that indeed make no sense.

Of course, there will always be people who visit a given place for a couple of days on a cheap package tour and then claim they've been there, done that all...

If you are the kind of tourist who actually opens their eyes you'll love Malta.

Beachlovers forget it. Explorers or those who actually take an interest in the people and places outside the hotel grounds are the sort who will appreciate Malta. I've got friends who go twice a year and won't think about anywhere else. Now it's part of the EU it makes visiting even more desirable (except for duty frees that is...)
Lead me not into temptation, I can find my own way there...

Approach into Malta can take one of two routes (for arrivals from mailand Europe). Rwy 32: Fly abeam Gozo and Comino islands all the way down the East coast of Malta. Then a right turn over Marsascala bay on the base leg. Finals will offer a great view of the Malta Freeport. Unfortunately pax on the left do not see a thing. Views on this approach are only available for pax on the right. This is however the most common route as the prevailing winds are mostly Northwest. Rwy 14: Fly overhead the Gozo VOR then straight to the runway some 20 miles away. This offers great views for passengers sitting on both sides of the plane.

As for the beauty of Malta, it depends what you are after. There are nice beaches and no so nice ones. If you are looking for nightlife, you will find it in one particular place which is very dirty with people getting drunk in the streets and throwing up all night. This goes for locals and foreigners alike. If you are looking for history and historical places, forget Greece and Spain. Even the USA. Malta is a multi billionaire in history. Buy some travel books and find out for yourself, or e-mail me and I will give you more information.

LMML 14/32: May be I was at the wrong places. Anyway I was wondering about KM service on some of their flights they are offering a nice service with Hot Meals etc. (eg. A 319 & A 320), last time I was flying with a 737 with almost all seats inoperative, but still occupied. Those flights I really not enjoyed. So what is going on in Air Malta ?!? Also I heard LH want to fly with RJ-85 aircrafts from a few points in Germany to Malta, using ex Azzura equipment. Is there a new collaboration between the Maltese flag carrier and LH, or why they are using Air Malta`s owned aircrafts to fly into Malta ?

Delta maybe you should visit again and rediscover the islands. There is so much to see. AirMalta has recently revised the inflight service. Hot meals are offered free on flights longer than 2.5 hrs (AMS, UK, Scandinavia and Russia). Other flights have cold meals. Free wine, beer and soft drinks offered with meals. Other bar consumption is at a charge. On scheduled flights only, of course. Crew has been reduced to minimum on most flights. I am not aware of LH using ex-Azzurra RJ's. Last thing I heard was that they have been parked at Exeter awaiting sale.

The top floor is occupied by a glass fronted observation deck, which is worth checking out.

The number of flights is quite low, but there are gems. When I visited in 2002, there were B727 of Libyan Arab Airways and Nomads N727M also F28 of Libyan Arab Airways.

If you take a left hander on leaving the airport, go along to the underpass then take another left hander on the other side you come to Safi, which contained 3 BWA/Air Leone BAC111 and DC3 T9-ABC. You can also get taxing shots from Luqa. There is even a rickety gantry to see over the fence. The locals use it and no one seemed to mind. When security drove past, I waved and they waved back.

There is also the Aviation Museum at Ta'Quali and the War Museum at Fort St Elmo in Valetta.

Relax and enjoy. Also try to find time to visit the historical sites, it is well worth.

One of the longest runways in Europe, and an approach mostly over the sea.

Sit on the right side of the a/c for better chances of a good view. (more often than not, approach is from the south with fly-past over the east coast)

on takeoff sit on the left.
