Weird Plane At DAB On 9-08

Sat Sep 11, 2004 1:38 pm

I had just got back from Evacuating to Atlanta from Frances when I returned to Daytona Beach on Wednesday evening. I went outside when there was very little twilight left when a weird jet came into DAB.

It made an approach like that of a fighter plane doing a flyby over the runway, then circling around to land. It was getting too dark to tell what type it was, but I thought it was a small corporate jet perhaps.

What was weird about this plane were its lights. Instead of having the red rotating beacon or red or white strobe below the fuselage and on top of the fuselage or tail, this plane had pulsating HID lights (those blueish lights you see on the Embry Riddle planes and on luxury cars) below the fuselage and on top of the tail. Although the aircraft did have normal landing lights. I had never seen anything like this before in aircraft lighting, does anyone know anything about this aircraft?

Checking the Red1 website, there's a Lear 60 that came in around 7:15pm. These, along with Lear 31s, have the HID lights mounted on the tail top that appear blueish on approach. If the time is about right, this is probably your bird...by the way, blocked reg. from IAD so no idea on the exact reg.

"Irregardless, it's a Cat III airplane, we don't need an alternate!"

This plane came in more around 8:00. It was dark with just a slight amount of twilight to the west. I just arrived home from evacuation around 7:15 and it was still quite light then. Like I mentioned it did a Military approach which almost makes me think it was military.

I live off of Nova Rd. The plane approached from the east and did a pretty fast pass over my place at maybe about 1000 ft up or less. The plane then circled back around and made a quick turn back into DAB.

The plane had normal white landing lights, but instead of the red or white strobe anti collision lights located below the fuselage and above it (or in some cases on top of the tail), the HID blue lights were pulsating slowly.

You know how Beech 1900 and King Air 200 aircraft have the white slow pulsating anti collision lights? it was like that except they were HID lights

I've seen Lear 60's come in and they have the distinctive pulsating lights on the tail. I believe they usually park over at NASCAR but I could be wrong...

You definitely can't rule out military as they like to do practice approaches at DAB at night (but I'm sure you're aware of that  Smile)

I've also seen FAA King Airs perform full length low approaches on 7L/25R testing the ILS (but never at night)

I've seen Lears with pulsating white lights, and I know Lears have a landing light mounted in the tail for some reason and occassionally it pulsates, but the landing lights were normal, the pulsating lights were the anti collision lights. I've never seen any plane with pulsating HID lights before, i didnt know HID lights could pulsate. For those of you who don't know what an HID light is- they are found on a Embry Riddle aircraft, ASA CRJ-700s and a few other aircraft and on cars you can find them on luxury cars, mainly European cars like Benzs, Audis but also on several Lincoln cars like the Mark 8 and new Navigators. They are those flourescent blueish lights

Lear 60s are kind of long and narrow, I took this plane to be about as wide as it was long, again it was dark out.

The military has a lot of corporate aircraft like Beech 400s and Cessna jets etc. Perhaps it was one of them coming to Daytona with a state or federal official to inspect Hurricane Frances damage
