Pakistan's Newest LCC"Air Blue"

Sun Sep 12, 2004 10:40 am

Ok, as promised, I did say I was going to post something more informative here.

I was fortunate to travel to Pakistan from Mid July to early August on Emirates (I flew via the new Emirates JFK-DXB route, maybe I'll some info on those flights some other time). Searching through a.net, I did not find the topic, so I'll post it here.

Since the deregulation of Pakistan airline industry, a few airlines besides PIA have emerged (i.e. Shaheen, Aero Asia, etc.).

The newest one is "Air Blue". While I was not fortunate enough to fly on it this time around, I've heard lots of good things about it.

Looking at how Air Blue has started, it seems like they have taken a few
ideas from Jet Blue. In fact, it seems even the colour scheme seems a bit of a rip off (they didn't paint their engines blue though)!!

my favourite part of one of the press releases is:

"....has learnt that AirBlue has acquired 3 new generation Airbus A-320 aircraft on dry lease each of it has 20 Business Class seats and 126 Economy class seats"……........"AirBlue aims to focus passenger comfort at prices that offer value for money and that explains its decision to have leather-upholstered seats in the Business class and offering in-flight entertainment not offered by any other airline, including the PIA, on the domestic sector. The airline has also made arrangements with quality caterer outside to serve what it calls "exquisite cuisine" to the travelers. Initially, it will operate 3 flights on the Karachi-Lahore sector and similar number of flights on the Karachi-Islamabad sector daily."

Amway, there is a bunch of information about AirBlue and how it started on it's website...

www.airblue.com.pk

hopefully fellow a.netters will enjoy reading and commenting about the startup of a new airline company....

Very interesting and contemporary entrant in a traditional market. My observations are:

1- Yes the corporate identity seems to be inspired fully by jetBlue

2- They currently have 3 daily departures from Karachi which isnt much considering they have 3 Airbus A320s (or not yet??)

3- They could tap into the Gulf gold-mine market as a huge part of their low-fare market is there (Pakistani expatriates working the Gulf). Is a Dubai service under consideration?

4- How much of Pakistan's population is online? There needs to be a sizeable online market otherwise internet promotions will be meaningless for now.

The Gulf labor market population is definitelty NOT ONLINE and theyre the type who wont even go online to buy tkts...but rather trust their local travel agents.

Air Blue by law has to first fly domestic flights in its 1st year and then international.

A 320s of Air Blue have sufficient range to fly to BKK/DXB/AUH/JED/RUH/DAC/CMB all nonstop from the 3 main Pakistani cities.

They shouldnt make the mistake of flying from KHI to all of the above mentioned cities because EK and PK will eat them up out of KHI. They should instead look at routes where extra capacity is welcome and needed such as from ISB & LHE...like LHE-BKK where TG has a virtual monopoly hold on. The bulk of Pakistanis labor workers in the Gulf are from this region and not KHI-SINDH area.

LHE-BKK...3 times a week A 320s

LHE-DXB...4 times a week A 320s

ISB-DXB...4 times a week A 320s

ISB-LHE-CMB...twice a week A 320s

LHE-AUH...3 times a week A 320s

ISB-AUH...3 times a week A 320s

KHI-DXB...double daily or daily dep KHI 2000 in order to get SPA agreements with the offline European-African airlines of KHI in order to connect with their late night departures out of DXB for EU-UK-Africa.

MUX(Multan)-DXB : twice a week A 320s

FAS-DXB : once a week A 320s

Obviously 4-5 more A 320s are needed if they want to fly all the above mentioned routes.

Its all very well to come in as an LCC. The Subcontinent has been seeing a plethora of such aspirants. But the minute they start talking about a 2 class product with business class etc., alarm bells start ringing in my head telling me their timer is on.

What the Indian Subcontinent (whether India or Pakistan) need at the moment is an airline that will demystify aviation. The costs of airlines in this region are particularly high due to the extreme taxation and levies on ATF. While the industry average for share of fuel costs is approx 15-17%, in our region its as much as 30%. So any new entrant talking of offering business class and IFE and the works at low cost prices needs his head examined.

Even in the scenario where the carrier is allowed to go international after the mandatory one year wait, looking at the profile of Pakistani passengers who travel to Gulf, the vast majority are not business class travellers. The few who can afford to fly business class will fly it anyway and on a better full service product rather than go for a cut price business class carrier.

Really, I feel there is a lot of confusion and lack of understanding in the minds of entrepreneurs who come up with the LCC concept in our part of the world and then again try to ape JetBlue and others who they forget are in a far more mature market than ours.

I'd recommend AirBLue to start small, look at connecting Pakistani cities with regular, affordable air services and mastering these routes before even thinking of venturing out into the big bad world (where EK, QR, EY and such other dangerous creatures lurk).

Btw...whoever said that Air Blue is a low cost airline is totally wrong.

You cant be Low Cost when you have J and Y classes and that too serve "exquisite meals on fine china / cultery to your pax".

Air Blue doesnt have the low cost reputation tag in PAK with the public so please dont say that it is such an airline because its not. Their J and Y class fares are just US $ 20-25 cheaper than PIA for the timebeing because for competitive reasons. This summer whilst I was in KHI...many people who flew Air Blue said that they thought it was better than PIA in both classes.

Vimanav...just like you said...it aint worth it for Air Blue to compete with EK-QR-PK etc out of KHI to the Gulf...hence if you look at the route structure that I have proposed to them, you would see that those routes need additional choice and have more room for competition especially LHE-BKK whereas MUX/FAS-DXB which desperately needs a nonstop link has none.
