NW DC-10 In MKE?

Mon Sep 13, 2004 5:57 am

This question has been bugging me for a while, and when I saw the other post about NW DC-10s being replaced by the 330, I was reminded of it.

Every time I flew out of MKE (about once or twice a year), there was a Northwest DC-10 sitting at the gate. Even during the summer months when wide-body charters would have been unlikely, there would still be a DC-10 sitting there. Did NW ever operate a regular DC-10 service into MKE?

Yes. As recently as a year or two ago even. I've flown MSP-MKE on a -10 more than once.

Ok, thanks Mikey--

As soon as I read your post I got a vague memory of someone mentioning the MSP-MKE route providing the only regular wide-body service into MKE. Thanks a lot, and hopefully we can eventually get a widebody between MKE and Europe.

And, back in the 70s, NW flew 747s MKE-JFK!

I didn't know MKE-JFK service. All I know was MKE-MSP 747 service early/late 70's. Are you sure MKE-JFK is a 747? That's odd!

MKE was one of the last stations to receive -40 service prior to their retirement, and also one of the first to get the sked on 753s. (Though I don't find that much of an accomplishment)

As far as MKE service to Europe?

Get in I-94 and drive about 90 minutes south.  Smile

Wow. That's wild. Once a 747 on a route that is no longer even served by anyone!

Yes, it was, believe it or not. Got an old Official Airline Guide North American edition right here.

Hi all:

When I read the topic of this thread, I was just about grab my camera and head down to MKE...it's been so long since the old -10s were a common sight at the airport. Sad

Yes, I remember flying a DC-10 MKE-MSP once. Before the -40s were retired in 2001, they were used for a lot of transcons and flights within the US, as previously mentioned. Now, if I only could get one last ride in the beauties by not having to cross the pond and spend tons of money on a ticket to Europe.

The DC10 (just before 9-11) was flown into MKE as recent as 2001. I believe this trip crewed out of SF FA base - I think it came from MEM.

Great question about the -10 into MKE. We flew the DC10 to MKE sometimes 3 times a day as recently as 2001. I worked the evening flight many times and was always amused at the reaction from passengers that we flew such big equipment to MKE. Most often the flight was empty but we did fill sometimes. A co worker friend in operations tells me most of the time it was for maximum AC utilization and line maintenance in MKE and the fact that MSP gate space was not available due to the large amount of widebodies RON (remaining overnight) in MSP.

That 747 flight through MKE was NW220/221 routed MSP-MKE-JFK.

The NW DC-10s for the most part went to MSP.
Most years there was only one daily DC-10 flight, the exception was in 1992 with 2 DC-10 flights per day.
In 93' and 95', the DC-10 went to DTW but In 94' there were no DC-10 flights at all in MKE.
The favorite final destination for the DC-10 was SEA, some years it was LAX, LAS, or SFO.
The DC-10 flights to DTW, most ended up in MIA.

When NW announced they were making MKE a focus city, it was like a flashback for me, since NW at one time, flew out of MKE to: (727 exclusively)

Boston 2X
O'Hare 3X
Detroit 5X
Madison 4X
Winnemapolis 6X
LaGuardia 3X
JFK 1X
Philly 1X
Rochester MN 2X
Washington 1X

This level of service ended around 1977, only to re-appear again 10 years later as the following. (post RC-Merger)

Appleton 3X
Boston 3X
CedarRapids 2X
DesMoines 2X
Detroit 6X
GrandRapids 3X
GreenBay 4X
Indianapolis 3X
LosAngeles 2X
Madison 3X
Memphis 4X
Winnemapolis 6X
LaGuardia 4X
Omaha 2X
OshKosh 3X
Philly 2X
SanFrancisco 1X
Seattle 1X
Tampa 1X
WashingtonNat 2X
Wausau 3x

As I see it, is the THIRD TIME a charm for NW in MKE?

LOL! What are you talking about? Winnemapolis? Sound very funny!  Laugh out loud

Tell me about this sound funny and why is that? Are you making fun of Minneapolis there?
