Aborted Landing At PHL?

Mon Sep 13, 2004 7:04 am

Don't mean to start an uproar...just an observation that I made and I wanted to see if anybody had info on what I saw. I was on US 548 from CLT-PHL. I was seated in 12A so I could look out the left side of the plane. As we were on short finals on runway 27R, I saw a USAirways express prop plane on short finals onto the perpendicular runway (runway 35??). The prop's wheels were down and I could see the pilots in the cockpit and at the last second they applied power and began to ascend. A few more seconds and it was inevitable that we would have collided or had an EXTREMELY near miss. This was at about 3:30pm today. Did anybody hear this on the scanners, witness it, or hear about it? Thanks!

Best of luck to USAirways! We're depending on you guys here in Philly.

Yes, that would be traffic in on 35. Since the use of 35 has heavily increased over the summer months, with more and more people requesting it. Alot of Intersecting Alerts are set off for 27R/ 35. It happens about 5 times a day. You should have been there on the 28th of Aug, there were about 8 in 3 hours.

This was Sunday Sept 12 right? I was at Hog island Rd right next to 27R spotting, so you probably saw me out the left side. I saw no US Air's go around today, just an AA S80 around 2:45 PM.

EDIT: Sorry, you're saying the prop on 35 performed the go around I'm assuming. Now that I recall, I did see a prop going around near that time. It happens so many times a day its not even funny. And like PHL Approach mentioned above, we saw a lot on that day, in fact about 4 or 5 in a 10 minute period.

Missed approach/go arounds are very normal on 35 when traffic is landing 27R. I have been on 3 or 4 flights in the past 2 months which had to go around due to the controller misguaging crossing traffic.

No big deal.

Wagz,

Sorry...didn't look down...I saw the prop on final into 35 from the time we "hung a left" to line-up with 27R. Next time, if imminent doom isn't happening, I'll look down  Big grin It's good to know that spotters are around to document these kind of things if something had gone wrong.

Yeah, that day was crazy. So many go arounds. An AA MD-80 doing S-turns and them slamming a go around at the last second. The ATC went MAD. Started talking so fast we were laughing so hard. I think Vik got some of the ATC talking on a clip. Maybe he can get it up.

So that brings-up a question...what are the mechanics of a go around in such a situation? To me the passenger, it looked like a 734 and a prop plane (maybe a Dash-8) playing chicken until the prop lost and went around. Who fires the first shot over the radio? Does a computer in either plane question the proximity of the two birds? Does ATC tell one to do one thing and another the other?

cha747, ATC will be the first to let em know to go - around. The first stage on the STARS system at PHL is that both blips will turn red and it will display "CO" I know it's collision something. I just can't recall the what the O stands for. They will always send the 35 traffic around rather then a 27R arrival, it's much easier to make them climb runway heading and turn right for downwind. They will then either bring him around for a short final 26 or just vector him much higher over 27R arrivals for 35. The only time they will send something around on 27R is if someone takes thier good ol' time turning onto Kilo 4.

jaxpax, I wasen't there today but we normally stay on Hog Island Rd near 27R. So we can't see 27L departures unless we go down the road 2 miles at 9R. Which is illegal to park down there. We get away with it once in a while  Big grin.

Any of you guys catch the fighter jets flying over the sports complex this afternoon? I was outside cutting the grass and they scared the hell out of me. I'm guessing there was some delays on approach while this happened..
Caution wake turbulence, you are following a heavy jet.

No, honestly. There is a CO phase. My friend told me when he was working 123.8 NE App, I was in the tracon with him and had asked him cause it popped up a few times. I'll have to give him a call.

For anyone the Eagles face this year, TO and McNabb could be considered WMD's in a football sense  Smile...

Ry, I saw the F16s this afternoon while I was chatting with Paul Kanagie. Had no idea they were coming. They somehow got them out to the river without disrupting traffic too much. They then shot down the river at low altitude at a very high rate of speed before turning south and climbing. It was around 4 PM I think, so traffic was starting to get heavy again.

I have no idea how they got them accros the 27R ILS, since they would have been at roughly the same altitude as all the arriving aircraft. Since everyone seems to think its nescessary to fly fighters over sporting events these days, maybe they'll think twice about building they're next stadium right next to an airport.

After the debates and fiascos that led up to the construction of Lincoln Financial Field, Citizen's bank Park and the Wachovia Center (10 years earlier for the latter); I don't think we'll be seeing any new stadium construction in Philadelphia (never mind at the Sports Complex) anytime soon.

With regards to aborted landings, I think the only time I personally saw an aborted landing at PHL was around last March. A US A321 was approaching 27R, when it looked like it was just about the touch the ground, it ascended back up again. While I didn't have a radio with me I looked over at the far end of the runway and saw that another plane (it was too far for me to fully identify) had not quite exited the runway yet. Sure enough, it circled around and finally landed; while in flight, 2 other aircraft had since landed on 27R.

Wagz, MD11LuxuryLinr, PHLApproach, & Jalto27R,

How often are one or all of you guys over at PHL? I've been meaning to head out there again. I've been away on vacation and holiday visits during the last few weekends and have not had a chance to do some PHL spotting; although some of my trips did involve flying out of PHL. This Saturday, the 18th will be my first 'free' Saturday I've had in a while. Maybe I'll see some of you then.

Have you guys had any 'police issues' at PHL since the infamous May 23rd bust?
