Iceland, Any Other Airlines?

Tue Sep 14, 2004 3:00 am

Have there been any of the "majors" in Iceland before? I'm talking about BA/AA/LH/KLM??

Is there any other way to get to iceland other than Iceland Air?

Is there any other way to get to iceland other than Iceland Air?

From Europe:

Iceland Express plus some seasonal charters on German airlines like LTU or Condor (Thomas Cook or whatever their name is now).

It would be nice to see some more carriers to Iceland. Iceland Express is a great airline, I flew with them on their second week of operations, however they only serve London and Copenhagen. I am surpirsed that lufthansa or Air France dont fly a few times a week, surely they could fill a 737 with leisure passangers.

Perhaps ICE or the Iceland Govt has some regulations in place that only allows ICE to do the flights ? Just a thought.

Since I have an interest in Iceland, I once noticed a poster saying that DL had rights to serve KEF due to their PA European route acquisition. My guess is no ones else desires to serve Iceland as it is such a tiny market.

I think I saw an AirBerlin 737 parked there. Have to dig up my photos. I was there in May 2003.

Icelandair seems to do a good job; besides, the country's population is only 290,000....so the majors may not think of this market as large enough. On top of that, the traffic is busy pretty much in the summer -- though I hear that there are great parties in Reykjavik in the winters.

It is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. I highly recommend it.

Best,

SAS (SK) used to serve KEF daily from CPH until maybe 10 years ago! They used MD80's!

I also think Go had a daily service from STN 3-4 years back!

LH used to fly to KEF on Saturdays and Sundays using B732s. This was in the early 90s.

Thought I'd post some nice pictures from KEF. How many of you knew that the BA Concorde flew to KEF?

Another "big" player in Iceland was Air Atlanta Icelandic. What was their fate?

Lastly, I think this is a great shot:

I think BA's Concorde only came to Iceland about 2 or 3 times, on day-charters with British tourists.

True, Iceland only has a population of around 290,000 and incoming tourists are somewhere around 300,000 per year. So, it is a tiny market, not exactly making it viable for any of the European or American majors to fly there on a regular basis, as of course, they are not going to make a flight profitable filling it up with leisure travellers!
The 'lack' of majors is hardly due to the Icelandic Govt's regulations, as they are not that protectionist.

Air Atlanta Icelandic is still around, in fact, larger than ever, although due to their nature of business (charter), most of their operations are based overseas, although they still do an occasional charter out of Iceland.

GO did serve Iceland daily during 2 or 3 summers.

According to an article in Airliner World magazine about Iceland Express, the average Icelander travels abroad 4 times a year, so even though the population is small, there is still a large and viable market. I think the real obstacle to major expansion remains the high prices so it's still very much a niche market.

Iceland has an open skies agreement
Air Iceland flies in Iceland plus bluebird cargo and islandflug.
For some reason I thought Pan Am served KEF in the 60's or 70's, anybody help with that
