AF To Detroit This Spring

Tue Sep 14, 2004 5:57 am

Looks like AF will start service to Detroit this spring. Just a guess, but I suspect that the equipment will be an A330 (because of size). Also, I would think they wouldn't run the flight daily at first, maybe 5 times a week. What do you all think?

Shoot, I knew I forgot to put something in this post. I wish I could, but I cannot reveal the source. But I can promise that this information is extremely reliable, but of course, nothing is for sure until it happens.

then I suggest this as a delete. (not that I truly care anyways about AF)

Try next time not to post something that may be false to us and then tell us that you cannot reveal the source. Then again i am not saying that you are lying...just dont put something that isnt worthwhile to this board unless you have cold hard facts to show us.

no offense but how many times have we heard stuff like this? good luck to detroit for getting this service, though. it along with denver and seattle have been rumoured to be the next possibilities for AF. i like the simplistic AF livery, even if the plane is usually dirty as hell.

Sorry. I guess I should have been more clear in the original post. I guess this has to be classified as a rumor becuase it is not 100% official yet, at least according to the information that I have it extremely promising. But I can guarantee that the likelyhood of this happening is virtually a certainty. The most that I can reveal is that corporations in the Detroit area have been approached by AF for incentive contracts. AF has assured these companies that the flight is a go. But like I said,we wont know until it happens.

ORD777 is probably right - but I'm pretty sure it will be a codeshare on the NW flight. With NW in Skyteam it would make perfect sense.

There is no harm in saying "A contact in the US Air France division" as that certainly makes people believe you a little bit more than "I cannot reveal my source".

If AF does start DTW services...then the ideal way to do so would be 4-5 weekly A 332s nonstop from CDG...lots of Arabs in Michigan state that would fly AF to North Africa and the Middle East where both KLM and itself have a sizeable network/presence.

How does NWA do on its DTW-CDG A 333 daily flights? do they fly MSP-CDG too?

NW doesn't fly MSP-CDG, their only int'l routes from here (not counting Canada or Mexico) are LGW, AMS and NRT.

While admittedly both a NW and an MSP fan, which makes me obviously biased, I don't understand the logic of AF effectively going dog-eat-dog against NW in the DTW-CDG market when numerous connection opportunities at MSP go unserved.

All the rumors I have heard about airlines coming to Detroit over the years I am imune to them practically now.

Air France was rumored to come to Detroit the day the Midfield Terminal was opened. Alitalia was rumored prior to them joining Sky Team and when they were partners with Northwest back in the late 1990s. Alitalia hasnt been back to DTW since the late 1980s other than cargo

I have heard many rumors of Saudi Arabian and Emirates coming to Detroit but nothing happened.

Then there were the Aeromexico rumors with the twice daily flights this past summer and nothing happened.

Hi everyone,

For what it's worth, the rumor is credible. I work within the company (hope I don't get in trouble for saying it!)

The rumor see-saws between Detroit and Seattle, but yes, nothing is official and there really is not a timeline given for when this could happen.

Bonjour Chef!

Any reason on why NW wouldn't just add another NW flight DTW-CDG. That route during the summer is almost always full. And if it isn't full there are 5-10 seats open.

I guess we will wait and see. Also it probably will either get an early or late landing slot since the 3pm-6pm customs gates tend to be packed with NW flights already.

What would also be interesting too see is if either KE or NW add an ICN - DTW frequency or an MSP - ICN non-stop to link up these 2 Sky Team hubs for connections to/from Asia.

Yeah that (KE ICN-DTW) might be a possibility but I hear more often that KE is considering starting up ICN-CVG service to catch all of the DL feeder traffic there. Would make sense but could this route fill up a 772, which is what I'm guessing KE would have to put on this route. A 333 wouldn't make it, would it? Either way it's pretty close to ORD and not so far from ATL, which both have KE service.

There used to be a DTW-SEL flight back in the late 1990s and they would fill a 747-400. I wouldn't be surprised to see DTW-ICN happen either with a NW 744 or a Korean Air 744 or 772 depending on demand for the route.

This is great news for the huge Lebanese community in the state of Michigan, who'll enjoy minimal lay-over time at CDG on their way to BEY...

I remember a thread on this forum many months ago....big rumour....Kenya Airways was going to start Detroit-Nairobi nonstops...boy, did that one die quickly.

If I were a betting man (which I am)....I would put a small wager on the following>>>>>>>

Air France to DTW....NO

Either Mexicana or AeroMexico to DTW....YES....probably DTW-GDL.

We'll see.

I am surprised that there aren't more direct DTW to Mexico flights due to half of Daimler Chryslers products being built down there.

GDL??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????  Nuts

Why wouldn't they do the obvious first and fly DTW - MEX?????????????????

As far as DTW - ICN or MSP - ICN, yes I did realize that KE does fly ICN - ORD, but unless ORD is providing some GREAT O & D traffic, wouldn't it make more sense to route traffic through MSP or DTW where NW can provide so many connecting opportunities. AFAIK, KE doesn't have any codeshare agreements in place with AA or UA out of ORD.

As far as ICN - CVG, with all due respect to the good folks in Erlanger, CVG is a fine terminal that has done GREAT things over the past several years, but I still feel MSP or DTW would make a superior connecting airport for passengers connecting to/from KE flights. BTW, Metro Detroit has a substantial Korean population in their own right.
