What's With Austrian And Lauda Air?

Tue Sep 14, 2004 3:02 pm

I understand Austrian group has done some re-branding. What's the current role of Lauda Air? I notice some Lauda Air routes are carrying Austrian's OS designator. Does it mean Lauda Air is all treated codeshare flights with OS without its own designator?

Actually, all scheduled flights by the Austrian Airlines Group now carry the "OS" designator, the flights also carry - in CRSs - the connotation of being "operated by Lauda Air" or other airlines...

Lauda is what Austrian calls it's "Leisure division" - it was supposed to fly the routes where the emphasis is a bit less on business travelers... but seeing that, for example, PVG was started with NG planes - and I don't really see that as a leisure-only destination - that strategy seems to have been somewhat discontinued.

What Lauda does is operate quite a few charter flights to European warm water destinations (Spain, Turkey, ...) - not sure if they do that under the "OS" or "AAR" designators, or if they use NG for that...

I checked the Star Alliance timetable. The flight from VIE to PVG will use Austrian's 340 starting November but will resume Lauda's 767 the end of December, which is quite interesting.

Also, Austrian does some warm water charter flights with its own planes, primarily the MD-8x.

Will we see Lauda Air or Austrian painted aircrafts in Australia? The 777 and 767 will be repainted in Austrian colors.

All flights of the OS Group (OS, NG, VO) are generally shown as "OS" no matter which of the airlines operate the flight.

Previous plans where to integrate the 777 into OS and to repaint the acft to OS livery. On the other hand the MD´s would have moved to NG in NG colours for charter services.
For the moment they have nothing noted so far regarding this movement or have announced something in this respect.
.
NG will be focussed on the leisure segement meaning charter flights and scheduled flights to leisure resorts (like PMI) - those are indicated with the 9000-series flight numbers.
In addition NG is serving the Far-East/Indian Ocean/Australian destinations from PVG south incl DXB, SYD, MEL to MRE. On these routes the 777 and 763 are used. Also the entire Caribbean destinations are served by NG - be it Cancun, Tobago, Cuba, DomRep or Montego Bay.
Cabincrews soon will have almost the same uniform.

Recently OS group finalised the agreement on the full integration of NG staff into OS in respect of their work contracts - meaning that salaries, working hours and conditions is now the same - NG staff gets higher salaries, OS staff gets slightly lower salaries (especially the pilots).

So sooner or later you will not see a big difference between OS and NG. NG will continue to operate under their own operators certificate.

VO: Altough now operating as "Austrian Arrows" the registered company name remains Tyrolean Airways with headoffice at Innsbruck. VO continues to operate as such and they also have different working contracts for their staff thus being a 100% daughter company.

For all that - it is for the moment quite complicated - for example the services out of BTS airport are 100% OS - but the aircraft/crew for these flights come from NG (737).

Aircraft orders are made by the OS Group - they have ordered another 737-800 so that 1 738 is delivered in April05 and 1 in Jul05 - the 734´s will go out of service in Oct04 and in Jul05, also the 733 is going out of service in winter 04/05 - meaning the 738 fleet will have 8 acft for the leisure flights. And it also means that NG remains with Boeing acft (the CRJ´s have been moved to VO).

I know ... complicated mixed operation ....

Regards from VIE

Service to China was started years ago when OS and NG were still separated.
Initially everything by OS, probably because of traffic rights, VIE-PEK, but later also VIE-PEK-SHA and VIE-PEK and VIE-SHA nonstop.
Later on the flights to SHA were stopped, but VIE-PEK remained.
When they started flying to Shanghai again this spring, the only available aircraft in the OS-Group were NG's 767.

Yes, fully integrated in VO, flights ACH-VIE are now operated with DHC8-400 acft.
The former Rheintalflug ERJ-145 are now with Chautauqua Airlines (N975RP / N976RP), the 3rd one (OE-LSR/CN 145203) is unknown to me where it is now...

But why will OS fly Austrian 340 to Shanghai in November this year, and resume flying 767 in December again? How is this 340 available?

The A340 is available because the routes it flies now are reduced in winter (Canada and Japan). And the 767 might go into maintenance or is used for charter flights...

Thank you! What is the service like on OS A340? I might like to seize this opportunity to try the A340 PVG-VIE during my stay in Shanghai. Much better than Lauda Air's 767 I suppose?

So can we expect to see the NG 777's in full Austrian livery anytime soon if at all?

Cheers

the A340 is shown until Dec 20th - on this date the 763 "op by NG" is back on the VIE-SHA route.

I could think they will use the A340 from the VIE-YUL flights (OS0073) which is last served on 27OCT - during winter schedule YUL is offered on OS0071 to YYZ with connections on AC to YUL - for the period November till mid December to SHA.

was a little bit slow with typing - MD87er was quicker

@Mulder - hmm, difficult to say which of the 2 products is better - since it is a flight op for OS by NG the inflight service is OS style anyway. So it is just the question 763 or A340, isn´t it?

@MELflyer - possibly yes - I could imagine something like that to be done with a major technical check of the aircraft since (what I know) the 777 is going to stay on the downunder routes...

TW741, great response from you. I am just thinking if A340 is equiped with PTV on economy class. Does 767 has PTV on economy? How about on demand video? Thanks!

@Mulder

The 340-300's are equipped in Y with PTVs whereas the 340-200's not!
All NG's 767-300 have in Y PTVs!

Kind regards from Brazil

1 A340 OE-LAL (and the A330´s) has an interactive system for movies, music, games on PTV also in economy, the 3 other A340´s dont have that interactive system but the large screen plus monitors in eco. So this depends now which A340 is used.

@Bustaphil - question - is OE-LAK also with PTV´s in eco? I thought it is only the Alpha Lima A340!

sorry Mulder that I cant be more specific. but the seating pitch is larger with the A340 over the 763 eco - not much - about 1 inch.
