United Airlines's B 747-238s

Wed Sep 15, 2004 12:58 am

Why did UA purchase them from Qantas? Didn't they have enough B 747s at that time? Why didn't they order it from Boeing?

Also what's up with them now? Where are they? I know they were retired in 12/2000.

Qantas sold all PW-powered 747s in the late 80s/early 90s as the 744s were delivered. The oldest aircraft went to People Express in 85/86 and subsequently to Continental. These early 70s aircraft aircraft were retired over the 90s.
As for the ones that went to A: I guess it was just a good deal for UA as they were expanding quite a lot around that time. They got the "newer" ones, built in the mid-70s, out of Qantas fleet. These lot of 6 or 7 was retired in 2000, so much is true. 2 are still flying for some Third-world operators/Hadj-flights, one is with Orient Thai.

I believe there were two B747-200s that UA purchased from another company that had better range..perhaps equipped with PW JT9D-7R4G2 engines specifically assigned to do JFK-NRT. I may be wrong on this but they were pretty much B747-300 engines mounted on a B747-200.

The other B747-100/200s that UA owned were early models that lacked in range/performance to make such trip. NRT-LAX, SFO, SEA were pretty much the best they could do..JAL and NW had a few of these late model B747-200s also with improved engines specifically to do East Cost-NRT before B747-400s were available.
