Delta's New Interior

Wed Sep 15, 2004 10:20 am

Looks like they have already started installing it.

From deltanet:

"Delta's Atlanta-based employees are invited aboard Delta's first completed aircraft with the new interior from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Delta North Technical Center. The new all-leather seats throughout the first class and economy cabins will help Delta create a travel experience that is inviting, stylish and practical and one that customers will not forget. The new interior is also furnished with more durable elements that will help Delta reduce maintenance costs over the years. As opportunities become available, employees systemwide will be able view the new interior."

I'll try to take pictures.. they may not let me though. Anyone else planning to go?

If you get on the Deltanet and go to the TOC website, there is a site for Cabin Programs. On their homepage there is a montage of interior pics. from what I could see there was a wood laminate floor somewhere on the plane, pale blue leather seats just like Song for Y/C, a dark grey or black F/C seat with a light grey center piece. A pic of a bathroom countertop that was probably made from corianne rather than stainless steel. Then a swatch of carpet.

Please post pics from tomorrows preview. Also please try to get a hold of some sort of timeline for the fleet if you can. Thanks!!! Enjoy the Kool Aid!!!

Saw it today. First plane with the new interior is an MD-88, which will start flying passengers tomorrow.

Both cabins are leather. I would say it's definitely an improvement in coach class. The already poor first class cabin is now much worse. I will post pictures either later tonight or tomorrow.

So, the "new & improved" FC seats are WORSE? I didn't think it could get worse than the flat, featureless domestic First seats most majors use...

I think the first class seats are currently just new covers, with new seats being planned. Anyone else heard that?

I think 9005 will be the next aircraft to be done. It should be started in about 2-3 weeks and finished about a month after that. Some others will be getting partial upgrades in the near future.

Seems like the role out will be very slow, which presents a bit of a catch 22:

a) fast role out means big costs, which DL may not be able to afford

b) few aircraft re-fitted means lower costs, but "random" factor as to whether your aircraft has new interior, meaning little or no immediate yeild/load factor increases as a result.

what is the business plan/role out behind this stratgey?

They can begin to market it now. I feel that JetBlue and Independence have ignited a new amenity race. In several years, all domestic mainline flying will be on the (nice) leather seat / PTV paradigm. People like nice seats.

So, leather seats and PTVs are "IN" and meals and other inflight services are "OUT"?

Its interesting how airline marketing has changed....

Thank god they did away with that two piece seat cover crap that is on the old first class interior. Did I see something that looked like wood flooring in the lav...? I think it looks much better... I just pray we do not start miss matching the interior like we did a lot of the exterior paint jobs.

"In several years, all domestic mainline flying will be on the (nice) leather seat / PTV paradigm."

This will not happen. No legacy carrier other than Delta has said they will put leather seats in the main cabin. Also, you will not see legacy carriers spending millions of dollars to retrofit current planes with in-seat video.

Looks sort of cheap--like they just reupholstered the existing seats. I'd assume all DL did was re-upholster the seats and not order new frames. I actually liked the DL First seats as they were before. The coach section looks just like a 737 Shuttle copy. Whatever though, my preference is for leather over fabric.

Really is this the best they could do? It looks 1980s. Sure it's leather, but it isn't visually inviting at all. sure domestic seats don't need winged headrests....but some shaping to create the illusion of a headrest at least isn't too much to ask. How would you feel if you purchased a new car and it had old 1960s style bench seating?

for comparison, check out Jetstar's new leather seats.

As you can see, Delta's seat looks rather old. If they aren't prepared to do it properly, why not just save the money. God knows, they can do with it.

I have to agree that it does not look inviting, at all. The covers look like they have "leather seating surfaces" but vinyl sides and backs. Wood in the lav is a nice detail but seems in contrast to the featureless seats.

Very Aeroflot '79.

Leather is OK on lhort haul flights, but the novelty and comfort really wear off after the fourth hour. You start getting sweaty, and if they are a low grade of leather, they don't breathe. Besides, these new seatcovers look cheap. They remind me of my old school bus.

I actually like the way it looks--Hopefully it will bode well with the idea that 'Leather=luxury'. Me I love leather--in my car; on the plane I really could care less.

Cool looking new seats! Soothing, calm colors. Like the hardwood floor look too. Don't know why they went with leather, not always the most comfortable texture after a while. But still cool.

Hey, just curious...did you sit in the seats? If so, is there much more room than the old ones?

I noticed it's still in a 2x3 configuration...which makes me wonder if you'll be sitting in leather but still crammed in.

Good pics, btw.  Smile

Very dissapointing. This is why people flock more and more to the LCCs. Even when the legacies try to emulate the LCCs like with Delta having leather seats, they do a half-ass job of it. Always late and never as good.

Couldn't hae said it better myself. The seats are very dissapointing, and as someone said, look more like seats from a school bus than an airplane.
That being said, comfort is obviously the most important thing. Who knows, maybe these seats are really comfortable but just look horrendous.
One thing I liked though was the bathroom. Looks very nice, not like a plane bathroom!

I like the overall look. So many airlines have gone to blue seats that seeing another color is refreshing.

I still think AA has the best coach seats with the adjustable headrests. Even on a 2-hour flight, it's nice to raise the headrest and adjust it so that I can snooze with getting a crick in my neck.

Imagine -- the hordes of highly selective Airliners.net users being disappointed in a departure from the status quo!

The look of the new interior -- minimalist, modern, informal -- appeals to me personally. Can't wait to try it out in person. That will be the test.

It's my understanding that the seat pitch, legroom, and all that good stuff is exactly the same as it was before. I did sit in the seats, they're not too bad. Coach is definitely an improvement, I think. However, first class looks and feels less inviting. I'm not sure about long-term, but for the brief moment that I sat in the first class seats... they're certainly not as enjoyable as they were before.

Are you delusional? Those seats, particularly economy, are crap. Now they're just leather covered crap. The design looks as old as you do. How can you think that looks modern compared to the Jetstar or Lufthansa seats i posted as examples? I mean, seriously, be objective?

These things may not matter to economy class passengers that much, but they are part of what executives call "the marketing mix". The important part here is all these little details add up to an overall "feel" and image. In a service environment, physical evidence becomes very important. It may not matter to those who travel once a year at best, but your heavy users will have an opinion about how certain company's feel..... and a key part of that is going to be where they spend the whole time they have that experience. It goes in the same category as the font's and logos used, and staff uniforms.

The seats are fine (although I def think they could do better esp in First class). What about service though-thats more important. How are they going to improve that. Whats going to make the average flyer fly Delta instead of an LCC. Leather seats...big woo hoo. Pax are looking now for entertainment, pleasant environment. Think IKEA in an airline- thats how I truly believe you make money

Those seats are just as ugly as I-Air's, if not worse, they look more like plastic and the color of the leather, does not fit with Delta, i would imagine a darker blue would have been better, as for the bathroom, what a waste of money to put that stuff in, maybe it would look good in FC though.

I just wish they would put those damn PTVs that the flying public is obsessed with on the damn plane and advertise it like crazy. TV, TV everywhere! Actually though I don't see why they wouldn't put the song system on board all DL flights. That system is awesome- much better than JB or Frontier. Skip the leather- go for the darned PTV!

Lufthansa --

How, exactly, do you know how "old" I look? Freaky...

It would appear, predictably, that our subjective standards for evaluating aircraft seating differ. I stand by my original opinion, your posts notwithstanding. Please note that I did not offer a comparison between the Jetstar and Lufthansa seats you suggested and Delta's, nor will I.

My appraisal of the new interior scheme is that it creates a pleasing environment for us frequent travelers. But, hey, I haven't seen it in person, and likely neither have you. So this discussion is basically moot.

I'll concede, however, that the Jetstar interior is quite impressive. Wish we had something like that here in the States... Living at the mercy of the U.S. majors, I guess my expectations are pretty low these days anyway.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Personally, I'm not a fan of the seats (I do like the lav though)... but you have to realize how the general public will react. I'm sure Delta will market their "new leather seats in coach" and people will be attracted. When you hear leather you think comfort and luxury, they don't have the pictures or background to know how plain they are.

those jetstart seats look awesome... I would rather sit in seats like that... even if they were cloth not leather... I don't get why everyone likes leather... if its to cold its like sitting on ice... to hot and you stick two it... I choose cloth any day...

I gotta go with the majority here....the quality of the leather looks pretty low grade and it is obvious these are the same old McDonnell Douglas seats from way back. You can cover them in whatever you like, but they are not going to be any more comfortable and no farther apart. The wood flooring (faux or otherwise) looks nice, but it has to stand up to alot of wear and tear in the lav...pee will be all over it after every flight. I hope they have a way to keep it clean. Lav floors like galley floors are best left rubberized for cleaning purposes..I'd rather have those surfaces clean than just stylish.

I think the new seats look like the old vinyl seats that you would have found in economy cars of the 1960's. They look very cheap and the color reminds me of something that you would find in a funeral home!
They certainly could do better than this!

Those Delta seats look like something you find on a public bus.

And to think Jetstar is a LCC and there leather seats look 20+ years ahead of DLs and much more comfy/roomy.
