AF Changed Me From A 777 To An A340

Wed Sep 15, 2004 1:45 pm

Just heard from my travel agent that Air France have changed my flight times and aircraft type from a 777 to an A340 for my YUL-CDG trip in December. I'm gutted, as I got to try the A340 on the outward flight, and really wanted a 777 for the return. Aw well, c'est la vie!

I suggest you take the ConcordeBoy method and refuse to fly on that 340!  Smile

Since you're 16-20 years old, you will have many, many more chances to fly on an A340 in your lifetime - provided you don't get run over by a car or something similar in the next months. Big grin  Big grin

At least you get to fly Air France, one of the most underrated airlines here on a.net, so that's a good thing.  Smile

Tristar, he already flew the A340

BFS, that sucks, its always good to go from a 340 to a 777, makes you realize how much nicer it is

Have you contacted Air France? If they are still going to operate a 777 between those two points, they may allow you to change to a different time so that you can fly on the plane you want. The same thing has happened to me (though not on AF). I explained why I wanted to fly a specific aircraft and the airline changed my ticket at no charge. If AF is changing all the flights to an A340, then you're out of luck.

Too bad you don't live in the NY/NJ area. You can just change airport from EWR to JFK to avoid the A343 which is what I do even though it does cost me a lot more to go to JFK and fly the 777.

I've only flown AF on one round trip. It was by far the worst trans-atlantic flight I have ever been on. Others I guess have had better experiences.

AF has a few routes made always with a same type of plane. For example, the routes like CDG-TNR (Antananarivo, Madagascar) or CDG-BOG are from A340's, routes in Central-Africa or in certain North America airports are from A-330's, destinations such as Singapore and EZE/SCL are with B-777's.Many other destinations are done with a mix of dif. aircrafts, like YUL.Since you have 3 daily services YUL-CDG, you can find, a 772, a 744 or un 343.The first one leave YUL 17:35 (772).The last one leave YUL 22:50 (343), and the middle one in 744 (leave YUL 20:05)
But don't worry, anyway I know you will enjoy your journey in that A340-300.

My heart goes out to you, poor sod that has to fly 340 instead of 777!!

How cramp and small everything must be in the 340 cabin compared to T7!  Big grin

Thanks for all your messages of support at this difficult time!
Hee hee, I was tempted to see if I could change it, but there's a group of 8 of us flying together so I'm gonna leave it. It would have been nice to go on a 777, but the A340 on the outbound journey was very pleasant so it could be worse. And I agree with TriStar500 about their service - I was very impressed and I shall see how it compares with Air Canada in October.

I guess I'm perplexed as to how AF is "one of the most underrated airlines here on a.net" when everyone seems to tout their service and rave how good they are.

To me, an underrated airline is one that is repeatedly bashed or just ignored but people who actually travel have a very fine experience.

I booked a return trip on AF, CDG-NRT in February on the 773ER - they already changed the outward to a 772, just praying they don't change the return.

Problem is, to get the best fares, you have to book early ... but by booking early they've more time to change the AC type!

I'm also flying LHR-SCL in November on RG, LHR-GRU is an MD11, but the GRU-SCL leg started out as a 763, then an MD11, then a 772, now back to an MD11 - hope it stays that way?!?!  Big thumbs up

AF is an airline which if people have never flown before will be pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the long flight from JFK-CDG-JNB and back with them.
I will have to say they are better than Delta on some of the above sector.

I don't see what the problem is. The A340 is a great aircraft and AF is a great airline. You can fly on a 777 next time.

In addition to that. I prefer AF's airbus models. But don't get me wrong the 777 is also cool

Solanbo, as usual your spurting out your usual nonsense. I know it might be hard for you to believe but some people prefer the 777 to the 340  Wow!. He had flown on the 340 now he wants to fly on the 777. Can't imagine why he wouldn't wanna fly on the 340 again  Insane

I've flown both a few times and I can honestly say I prefer the A340. There was no noticeable difference in flights, but the A340s seemed more comfortable. Maybe it was the airlines: the A340s were Air France and the 777s Malaysian and Singapore. I'm travelling to Chile in November and was originally told it would be a 767, I was delighted to discover that it's now an A340. Four engines instead of two for long haul make me feel easier, particularly long flights over water, worth remembering BFS

i've flown on the 777 (BA), 767 (TW, DL), 747-100 (PA, TW), and DC-10 (LH) over the atlantic...I'd like to try the 747-400 (not likely to happen) or the 330 or 340...Heck, I'd just like to go again wouldn't you?

Whatever equipment they use, you are guaranteed a good flight with AF.

They are now up to six flights a day out of MAN to CDG, and are advertising heavily for their connecting services out of CDG for business class longhaul. So their customers are coming back for more. They are getting their prices right too.

I'd agree that AF don't always get the credit they deserve in these forums. I would also say that it is good to see AF and LH taking away the business from MAN that British Airways treats with some disdain. Both are doing great business out of MAN, and Skyteam are becoming a substantial presence in Manchester at T2.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find my own way there...

I would be pissed. I plan my trips around what aircraft a carrier uses. Espeically when they use different equipment on the same route. So try and see if you can get on the 777.

I personally prefer the A340 considering that I found a 2x4x2 configuration much more comfortable than the 3x3x3, especially when you're stuck with the window seat. I flew B777 on AF to PEK and return, seating was correct and service was really good.

Anyway, my next AF flight is also on CDG-YUL, but there was no A340 choice, only a 747 and a 777. I picked up the last one, I believe it offer IFE, but not the 747... Maybe I can also hope for a last minute change  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Wow, that is craptacular, had AA do that to me last summer with a T7, I had to fly a 763 into LHR instead of a T7. Never flown a A340, just a few LCC in Europe on A319.

I agree with many here. Cabinwise, I prefer the 340. You get a 2-2-2 in business class so no chance of getting stuck in the middle seat. In coach, you have two middle seats to get stuck on, as opposed to three on the 777.

Performancewise, the 777 is better without question. Better climb performance, better flightspeed, etc.

I have flown AF a number of times, in J and in Y. It's the best airline I've flown so far in terms of service. It does help, though, if you speak the language. You seem to get better treatment.

Have a nice trip

I have flown in J on the 777 in the middle seat and actually found it to be OK. I was travelling with someone else, so I was able to bother him to get out into the aisle to move around lol. I will admit, however, even though preferring the Boeing product, it is much nicer to be able to get up without disturbing anyone on those 2 middle seats on the Airbus 330/340.

A suggestion if you're flying main cabin on the A340, check-in early and ask (NICELY!) for row 21. Do not take row 33, it is a simple wall infront of you with no space for legs or carry on bags.

It happens sometimes that AF changes its aircraft schedules, I was supposed to have a 733 on the CDG-BCN route but eventually got a 735.

I also know that during the summer, their BEY (Lebanon) route is upgraded with an additionnal A332 or 742-744 in addition to the 772, depending on loads.

I will be flying next month CDG-EWR on CO, and preferred to take the 777 to the 763  Smile I think CO has a 3x3x3 configuration. Anybody knows a nice seat on CO's 777s?
