BA Cancel Over 1000 Flights In Nxt 3 Months

Wed Sep 15, 2004 7:35 pm

Just heard over BBC Radio 1, BA is to cancel over 1000 flights to help improve performance targets, Unions believe it is because they have insufficient amounts of staff to handle the flights. It mentioned NYC as having a cancelled flight/s !!

cancelling flights to 'improve' performance - nice bit of spin-doctoring there... surely by the sheer fact that flights are being cancelled - their performance is falling through the floor!

Perhaps Rod's Future Shape and Size includes these 'cancellations' then rather than admitting that Future Shape and Size = making the airline smaller (which includes staff numbers)

I understand that BA have been having a lot of trouble recently due to shortage of spare aircraft, particularly since the inaugration of the new maintenance computer system which seems to stop aircraft in perfectly good condition flying. By consolidating flights there will hopefully be a greater availability of spare aircraft to "improve performance".

Has it nothing to do with staff shortage at LHR?
Next flights : BRU-ZRH-CAI (LX)/ BRU-FCO-TLV (AZ)

I would also suspect that this may be a form of 'yeild management', that is to cancel some flights to reduce staff costs, 'rightsize' staff and equipment use to maximize profit. There have probably been many flights that are not profitable due to the staffing and equipment costs vs fare yields, in turn due to competition, weak demand.

It didn't stop my GLA-LHR flight being 90 minutes late on Sunday evening! (interestingly, the same flight that has been pulled from the weekday schedule, the BA1495.)

What is going to happen to the slots that aren't being used by BA? Surely VS and others would then argue that there should be some sort of use-them-or -lose-them rule as LHR slots aren't exactly in abundant supply

There is a rule on this, and a time restrcition (someone else maybe able to help here). If they dont use the slots over that period, then they revert to BAA.

VS has some vacant slots at the moment, and has allocated to an Air France codeshare to Lyon, to ensure they retain them.

Oh, Great! Just when I was planning to jet on PHX-LHR on BA in Oct. Maybe I had better drive to LAX and catch Aer Lingus. Then RyanAir DUB-STN. I sure hate to risk flying on AA or DL right now.

I'm flying on BA next month ORD-LHR and returning CDG-LHR-ORD. Is there a way to find out if my flights will be affected?

It is only 2.36 % of their annual flights at off peak periods. Not sure why the BBC things this is news. Next they will be broadcasting

"easyJet cancel historic Go Fly's first flight route from London Stansted to Rome Ciampino for the winter season"

not news really.

Yes Dbo861 just go to ba.com and they list all the flights that are cancelled or operating infrequently. I think this is BAs way of sorting out problems with aircraft not staff shortages. Anyway its only till the end of december so interesting to see what happens after then????

According to FT it is the introduction of a new IT maintenance system that is the cause of the cancellations. Someone is facing the sack; about bloody time!

The cancelled flights are all here http://www.britishairways.com/travel/flightops6/public/en_gb?source=fltops.

In the grand scheme of things, the cancellations are minimal and bit of hysterical scaremongering by the Great British media.

Nevertheless, it's still a bloody nightmare and I hope heads soon start rolling at Waterside.

We are heading into the slow autumn season, when pax numbers drop and airlines attempt to fill up flights with ridiculous fare sales.....September and October are traditionally the most difficult for the airlines and many carriers are still flying their heavy summer schedules.

I think that BA is trying something new this year, cutting back certain flights on everything from a one-off basis to 2 month period in order to cut costs, take some seats out of the system in an attempt to improve yeilds, and this will also give BA an opportunity to do some maintenance on some airliners after the busy summer period. BA is simply handling this schedule change in a new way......not officially changing their schedules but simply cutting flights here and there.

I do think actions like this are confusing to passengers.....while a pax understands that flight X to city Y will be discontinued, notes like flight A will not operate on 3 september, 9 october and not on tuesdays during the month of november is a bit confusing. I trust that BA is working hard to reaccommodate affected pax.

Guys, this has happened in the past. If you look closely at the flights that are being cut they are really what we call 'excess' flights. The LAX, HKG, NBO, DXB, etc flights are all added frequencies for the summer. They are just going to end a little early. The daylight services from BOS, EWR and IAD are usually scaled back during the winter season. Last year the BA239/238 was cancelled for most of March. The BA 187/186 was as well.

I do agree, however, that it can be confusing to the consumers. We try to plan this out far enough so the seats are never released for sale, but this was not the case this time.

It is no big news really ;
With 350 a/c , 900 flights over 3.5 months is no big deal - in fact i expect as things improve, they will reinstate some earlier...

It is the new maintainence system that is causing most problems, but they also have staff shortages due to many ealry retirements and also the huge cutbacks they have made... it is sometimes taking over 3 months to get new entrants security passes.

StearmanNut - it is only 2% of flights, and they are cutting frequency on well served flights rather than removing all the services from destinations like PHX.
