IB Downgrade Its Service To Lagos

Thu Sep 16, 2004 2:37 am

currently IB flies 3x weekly to LOS. It will soon subtitute it to an A319. this is the only airline that will downgrade their service to Lagos ( in excpetion of LX suspension)... shame...

Because IB flew A 320s to LOS and is now DOWNGRADING CAPACITY on the route to A 319s.

Just a week or so ago...ppl mentioned here that IB flights were full of LOS on the A 320s so why would they downgrade capacity on this route unless it has to do with the aircraft availability issues.

Does the route make sufficient yield for IB?

My point is...that is not downgrading service...its simply reducing capacity. The B752 currently flying to LOS cannot go out full do to weight restrictions therefore the difference in actual seats that can be utilized in reference to the A319 is about 10 seats.

The A319 will have no weight restrictions on MAD-LOS, as opposed to the 320s and 757s. By using an A319, Iberia is maximizing yields and assuring all customers that they won't get bumped because the plane is too heavy.

IB's 757's are not extended range 757's. With a flight time between MAD and LOS of almost 5 hours that is really pushing it and has to restrict weight in order to carry all fuel/pax/cargo etc.

That's odd that there would be a weight restriction coming out of LOS. When we flew in there with the DC-10 and then the MD-11, all of the load was coming from the states into LOS and very light loads coming back to the U.S. Seems there's a different pattern for Europe.

Interesting that IB operates an A320/319 to LOS when other European carriers operate MD11s B747s and larger twin aisled aircraft. Does IB not have the loads to LOS that others do, the oil industry is important in all countries i thought. Does the IB aircraft offer just a 2 class service and is this their european service or a longer range intercontinental flight.

Thanks for any help.

Do the IB crew operate to LOS and back to MAD or do they get off in LOS?

IB is new to Lagos, having started service only a few months ago. The other carriers are much more established.

A B 757 can easily fly for 5-6 hours nonstop as is the case for US & CANADA transcontinental flights so why would a 5 hr MAD-LOS flight on a B 752 have a weight restriction imposed on it when a 5 hr flight is a typical flight for a 757-200.

One of the things to consider is that Nigeria is a tropical country, where the heat limits aircraft performance.

It scared the hell out of me the first time I took off from Bangkok with a fully loaden 747, I thought the thing wouldn´t come off the ground!

I think when a plane fly over desert ETOPS operations also apply, and now Airbus has ETOPS 120' for A320-family
Other hand, A319 is for me, a state-of-art aircraft.I really do like it.According to a friend of mine (AF staff) AF will fly to SSG (Malabo) with a new A319ER, and a fly CDG-SSG is longer than a MAD-LOS.Unless 100 minutes more.
A319 is a GREAT plane.Airlines like IB,AF and even a low-cost like Easyjet are very happy with them.

The idea of the route being weight restricted is ridiculous.

The longest runway at LOS is 13,000 ft long, and although it sure is hot over here, we are at sea level. The airport altitude is probably no more than 100 ft.

A 757 can take off fully laden under these conditions.
Admit it, you could care less about the continent Africa!

MAH4546: You are wrong, IB RETURNED to LOS after many years, they first flew to LOS in the early 70's till late 80's and then suspended service. They are only resuming service, LOS is not a new destination for them.

What kind of engines on IB's 757's? Rolls Royce engines provide more range. Also, I don't think they are ER's, which would definately make a difference.

Oh, I don't know. Technicalities aside, I'd say a 20 year absence qualifies it as a new destination  Smile

I got a link by email from a Spanish A.net watcher to an article that says IB might increase the number of weekly flights to Lagos from 3 to 5, if it gets approved by the Nigerian authorities. In that case there would be no decreasing of capacity. After reading the article I accidentaly deleted it, sorry for that!
