How Did Water Cannon Salutes Get Started?

Fri Sep 17, 2004 5:07 am

How did the traditional water canon salute get started as a tribute to first flights, last flights, flight crew retirements, etc?

Trickijedi,
I'm glad you're asking. Until the inaugural flight of KE's 744 to PRG, I always thought it was done only with a/c or crew retirements. Anyway, I think it's a great tradition and I'm sure a lot of fun for the firefighters! I hope someone will give us a bit of insight on the history of the water salute...

L410Turbolet,

Would you happen to know what year KE's inaugural flight to PRG took place? I agree, it's a great tradition and rather fun to watch.

What do you reckon the chances are of it happening either at BRS or at EWR on the return trip next year when CO operates its inaugural service? I hope to be on the BRS-EWR segment!

I've always been under the impression that the water salute had maritime origins. I've seen lots of old black and white photos and film where various ships entering/leaving ports got similar salutes from fireboats and tugs.

It started just this year, May 15 to be exact. First Korean Air intended to have PRG only a summer destination, served by A330. The demand was unexpectedly high so they turned it into all-year round one, 744 served this route 15.7.-21.8., A330 for the rest of the year.
The reason why they gave a water canon salute to the 747 was, that KE935/936 was historically first scheduled 747 service to PRG. PRG have seen numerous 747 flights before, but these were either unscheduled replacements or charters.

As for EWR and BRS it may happen in EWR for the departure, very likely in BRS on arrival, It may happen on departure from BRS, and most likely nothing in EWR on arrival.

Maybe Air France should inaugurate service somewhere and get a free plane wash in the process  Wink/being sarcastic

It relates back to the days of ocean liners. Maiden voyages and inaugral port visits were marked by harbour tugs saluting the arrival of the great liners with their whistles and those equipped with water monitors put on a demonstration.

Interesting how all the hoopla of maiden voyages transferred over to being such a routine part in the aviation world.

Anyone know the first ever plane that was honored with the water canon salute?
