New MD11 Operator:Santa Barbara Airlines Venezuela

Fri Sep 17, 2004 8:24 am

Source in Spanish: http://www.eluniversal.com/2004/09/16/eco_ava_16A493481.shtml

Santa Barbara Airlines have filed papers requesting permission to fly to Portugal and Italy from their CCS hub. They will acquire 2 MD-11s to operate those routes. The article doesn't say whether they will be leased or purschased. Santa Barbara's plans are to make CCS an important hub for conections between Europe and Latin America. They already fly to MAD and TFN in Spain, Bogotá and Quito in S. America and MIA in N. America.

Santa Barbara is one of Venezuela's leading airlines, being ranked 1st for its generated revenue and 2nd in terms of flown pax. Also it's cargo company is also growing and last year it flew 850 tons of Venezuelan mango to Europe Smile

I am glad to hear the good news. I dont know why dont they make the MD-11 do Madrid Italy, and the DC-10s Portugal. They know best, I am proud that finally someone with business sense is putting Venezuela back on the aviation map.

I thought the same when I read the article... the article says SB flies to BOG, but I guess they are wrong, dunno where the reported got that from. I was pretty sure they don't fly to BOG.

About BAQ, I know they flew there from Maracaibo with their ATR-42s, but I'm not sure if they still fly there.

Luis,
Thank you very mcuh for once again infroming me of Venezuelan aviation. This will be sweet if S6 starts flying to Italy and Portugal. They will compete with AZ 767 and TAP 310.

BTW, how do you see AZ as far as staying in CCS much longer or myabe increasing frequencies to comepte with thsi flight. I believe there is a huge Italian community in Venezuela.

AZ will be badly hurt when Santa barbara enters the italian market. I seriously doubt that they'll increase frequencies, in fact today's 767s are a downgrade from previous MD-11s and B747s. AZ flies 5X weekly from MXP and 2x weekly from FCO. I dont know where in Italy Santa Barbara will fly to, but my guess is FCO. Why? well I think the majority of the Italian community in Venezuela came from southern Italy which is the poorest region of the country, but I might be wrong about this...

There have been rumours that they may add a CCS-TFN frequency that will stop in MIA. As long as the aircraft are not Venezuelen-registered, like the 757s that they lease for the MIA-CCS route, this could be possible.

It would be great if Santa Barbara A/L could buy some Fokker 50's to replace the ATR's and Some Fokker 100's to replace the 722 and to have a different type of plane in the fleet.

Well, i think Santa Barbara does not need to change their ATRs at this time since the ATR surpasses a lot the Fokker50 (altougth it's not my favorite i like it too) on the other change the 722 and the F100 are in different market types so the F100 altougth can be a good fleet choice for a start-off airline with little resources is not the best choice for changing the 722, in this case the 722 can be replaced better with and A32X, or B737 series aircraft or with MD-8x like aeropostal,

Anyway does SantaBarbara looks for fleet replacemente at this time appart of the named DC-10/MD-11

Hmmm why drop their reliable and relatively new ATRs for some new a/c type unknown in Venezuelan aviation? Also the B722 won't be replaced for a F100. B722s are used on the Quito route. A F100 wouldn't make it from Quito to Caracas. As tavong said, if they replace the B722, it would be with either an A320, B737 or a MD-80.

Santa Barbara is not replacing the DC-10 with the MD-11. They will operate both types to Europe. Their long-haul fleet will grow to 2 MD-11s and 2 DC-10s. I do not know if Santa Barbara has any fleet replacement plan at this time.

Hahahaha, that might happen. They can add some seats in the cargo bay, and improvise a 2-decker, hehehe.

I do not know, but my guess is that they'll probably be ex-Varig. Why? Well the DC-10s Santa Bárbara currently has are also ex-Varig, so maybe the MD-11s will come from Varig too.

Hey!

absolutely great news for Venezuelan aviation industries,I see that Santa Barbara Airlines it's growing fastly, now Fokker50 the i think Santa Barbara fleet it's in an extraordinary shape! in my point of view Santa Barbara choose the right fleet for the right country, those 727 fit perfectly on SB routes so I don't see the problem, maybe in a possible future they might replace 727 but the other planes will stay long time in SB fleet.

Regards
