PPT Airport

Fri Sep 17, 2004 12:18 pm

Can someone fill me in on Papeete's Faaa Airport on Tahiti. I am very interested in this airport as I plan to visit the South Pacific sometime soon. I know Air Tahiti Nui and Air France obviously serve this airport, but who else. Is this airport far from the City of Papeete? What about getting to and from the downtown and the hotels. Any info is appreciated. Thank you.

Get information about Tourism to Tahiti. The airport is close, but depending on your belongings and lifestyle, you have different options of getting around. And Papeete is not a "city." It's a fabulous mixture of France and Polynesia. Simply look up Tahitian Visitors Information on a search engine and you'll probably be an expert by the time you go! And have a great time......

BTW, I've heard Air Tahiti Nui is the way to go.

Here's a diagram of the airport (be sure to click on each section to see pictures)

The airport is located in Faaa, the next town from Papeete. It's not a large airport, you exit the aircraft from stairs wheeled up to the plane. Airport is open in the front with no doors/windows, but rain does not bother you when you check in.. It's a very casual airport where people can just ride their bike or scooter in, hop off and check in right there. You might even see a dog sleeping on the floor.

You can either a taxi (more expensive in the evening - but expensive nonetheless) or a bus (le truck) to Papeete. Not very far. There are those le trucks going in either direction either to Papeete and past, or the other direction towards Punuuaiua (sp?) and Papara. That 'other' direction is where most of the resorts on the island are located.

In addition to Air France and Air Tahiti Nui, Air New Zealand flies to PPT from LAX and Hawaiian Airlines flies from HNL. I went on NZ, and the flight was excellent and timed well with connections from the USA in LAX, however getting it at 2:30am wasn't very nice because everything was closed down. The airport is really quite, but don't let that fool you. Lines can get extremely long in the night with the checkin for all of the international flights. I have heard horror stories of lines for check in and security exceeding 3 hours. (BTW the Faaa approach is amazing as you hit land just before you are on the runway).

Papeete and the main island of Tahiti is a nice place, but if you want the beaches and the true tropical paradise with less commercialism I would take a trip to Bora Bora or another one of the islands. Air Tahiti has frequent flights and isn't that expensive (but in reality everything in Tahiti is outrageously expensive). The other islands are the ones with the beaches and amazing hotels, but are more expensive.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

I spent 2 weeks in Tahiti. The first night I spent at the airport. It was quiet till AF B747 landed at 4 o'clock in the morning form CDG/LAX.

Then I took the "le Truck" to the ferry terminal to Moorea where I booked a backpacker. Moorea is nice but Bora Bora is one of the south sea dreams. I flew there with Air Tahiti ATR72. Air fares are not so expensive with Air Tahiti.

LAN is also flying to PPT.
Simle at the world and the world smiles back :)

Yep, LAN is flying to PPT. The flight departs from Santiago, stops at Easter Island then takes off again to PPT.
PPT's runway is built on the sea. The first time I landed at PPT in a French Air Force DC8 (I was 6) I was so scared...because all you see is water until the aircraft touches down.
An AF 744 once dived into the lagoon after landing...immat F-GITA, the aircraft has been repaired and is now known as the "GITAnic" lol.
Have fun in French Polynesia ! This place is full of amazing islands other than Bora Bora: Raiatea/Tahaa, Huahine, Tetiaroa (a small atoll not far from Tahiti which was owned by Marlon Brando), Maupiti...also don't forget Rangiroa in the Tuamotu islands !
Enjoy the time you spend there, Tahitians are amazing people.
