VLM Developments

Haven´t seen reports about it here:
- VLM has taken two ex Air Iceland Fokker F50, taking its fleet to 14 frames.
- One of the new F50s will be deployed on LCY-Jersey, the second is for a yet undisclosed route.
- Considers at the same time the addition of another type.

Great news for VLM!

They've been expanding quite rapidly over the last few years. However they do need a RJ of some kind if they want to undertake longer routes.

The 50 is a great plane but when the distance gets too big and the flight would take more than an hour and a half, a jet could really be used.

VLM has been profitable for several years, it's good to see them expanding.

One of the new F50s will be deployed on LCY-Jersey, the second is for a yet undisclosed route.

I believe that the additional aircraft is needed for the fact that VLM is doing a lot of charters (not charterflights for touroperators, but for example for companies who want to transport a lot of people). My dad was invited with a group of 50 people to Italy a few months ago, and Alfa Romeo had chartered a VLM F50, only to give one example.

Antwerp, 14th September 2004 – VLM Airlines has expanded its fleet with the introduction of two Fokker F50 aircraft, taking the fleet total to 14 aircraft.

Over the past 11 years VLM Airlines has been growing steadily, with increased frequencies on a number of routes, and the introduction of a number of new destinations to its network. Liverpool – London City was launched in February of this year, and the latest addition to the network Jersey – London City was introduced at the end of June 2004.

VLM Airlines has already added two aircraft in early 2004, but now these latest additions are required, in order to maintain the high level of service the airline offers to a large number of loyal passengers. The first additional aircraft (registration OO-VLL) will be delivered mid-September and will be operational on the Jersey-London City route, while the 14th aircraft (OO-VLZ) is to be delivered in November and will be used for additional charter services the airline offers to companies, organisations and sporting teams. Early next year this aircraft will operate a new route, which will be launched within the VLM network.

VLM Airlines chose the Fokker F50 right from the start, due to the high reliability these aircraft offer. Johan Vanneste, Managing Director of VLM Airlines comments: “The Fokker F50 has low direct operating costs, and especially a low fuel burn. This enables VLM Airlines to pass on significant savings to its passengers, for example by NOT implementing a fuel surcharge, in contrast to most other airlines”.
He continues: “This type of aircraft also allow us to fly to restricted regional airports that are known for their short check-in times and their proximity to the city. London City being a prime example as it is only 13km away from Trafalgar Square”.


Skyways Aviation has arranged the sale of the two Fokker 50s on behalf of Gladsheim Aviation AB. Both Aircraft have recently returned off lease from Air Iceland.

Interesting wording: "within the VLM network" -> I read it as a new route, but not as new destination.

It´s good news for VLM and as a Fokker 50 fan I like to see that airlines still choose this reliable, but of course older plane. I´ve seen lots of VLM charters in and out of Maastricht Aachen, mainly transporting journalists and musicians.
But the flight time with a Fokker 50 should indeed be limited, regardless how comfortable the plane is. If VLM would fly 2 hour routes while a competitor flies the same with a RJ, passengers will obviously choose the jet.

According to Manchester Airport, VLM will be adding a 10th frequency on their LCY service.

We had the North West Regional Sales manager in our office yesterday, and MAN-LCY is one of VLMs most profitable routes ever, which is surprising as LPL-LCY isnt doing quite as well.

VLM has been shouting about how successful the LPL service has been. I am interested to hear that it may not be all well on the route. The route is benefiting from a subsidy from the North Western regional development agency. Perhaps the route will last as long as the subsidy?

My dad flew on the LPL-LCY route mainly because it was a tad cheaper than the MAN flight but saying that LPL is well out of the way and is a pain in the neck to get to if you don't have a car available, where as MAN has the ever so handy rail link.

I'd go for MAN over LPL even though they are both equidistant from me by car.

Also VLM has options to take the Fokker 70, and serve more routes in less time. Their Fokker 50's are reliable, good, and the best of all, are the best regional airliner in the world (hope one day)...

I'm sure the LPL route is ticking over yes, but its not making money. And the fact that VLM continually increase the frequency from MAN kinda shows that LPL isn't attracting any traffic away from MAN. Bear in mind LPL and MAN are only 40 miles from each other. I'd expect to see a reduction from LPL to maybe 2/3 rotations a day very soon.

I'm flying LPL - LCY - RTM on 29th Oct and back on the 31st. Worked out cheaper than flying from Manchester, but then I'm taking the car.

I'm hoping they stick with the current schedule. Maybe traffic will start to increase as 2008 gets closer when Liverpool is the European Capital of Culture..

Now you guess what "kind of RJ" that will be when i tell you that the big boss of VLM is the same man behind Rekkof ?
